I also just realized that Elena's accusation to Damon, "You lied", does touch on one of the significant issues, from her perspective, with Stefan. As Matt says back in Season One, Elena was big on honesty. As was the case in her relationship with Stefan, the layering on of lie after lie becomes a huge burden for Elena. She makes this huge commitment to Damon by jumping in the car with him, she's all in. And then this is the outcome: Damon's lost to her forever. Bonnie also lied to Jeremy to protect their last days together in the spirit of whatever passes for normal. So Elena and Jeremy are sort of in the same boat, both feeling abandoned and betrayed by lies.

Re-watching Season Five. Now that Season Five ended four months ago, I'm enjoying the re-watch a lot more than I thought I would. I'm not carrying the same Stelena angst I did seeing the episodes for the first time. Silas is a lot funnier this time around. It's also remarkable that he's such a good driver -- right now he's driving Damon and Jeremy to New Jersey -- considering he spent the first century of motor vehicle transportation frozen underground in a tomb. There is a lot more of the reversal of Season One going on than I remember, that is, Delena is the status quo, and Stefan plays much more of a disruptive role than I registered -- or would allow -- all through the season last year. This time it is actually Stelena lurking under the surface. Last year it was never enough. Looking forward to the rest of the re-watch, and to the extra features on the DVD release! Turns out I was a lot more upset about Elena choosing Damon than Stefan.

Turns out I was a lot more upset about Elena choosing Damon than Stefan. So much this. Apparently I was also more upset over Stefan's death than Elena was. True that. Now, however, I feel it is only fair to say that, while I was judgmental of Elena's reaction in that moment, again she disappointed me, not any of the characters in the show, in terms of action, she did get in the car and drive into certain, sudden, explosive death to bring Stefan back. The way it was told to us it appeared her motivation was to be with Damon. But she did save Stefan and bring him back to me. That actually was my priority for the finale.
