I'm trying to decide if I should start reading these books now, before the show starts...or just wait until after so I can appreciate the show for its own merits and not do the compare thing I get caught doing when I watch Game of Thrones. Plus it can be nice to not know what is coming up. Either way I am definitely going to watch this series.

Unlike Game of Thrones these writers promised to stick close to the books and the first season (16 ep 1 hour each) will be the first book only. They already admitted some little changes. Like at the beginning of the book it's summer but since they started filming in October they changed the storyline to winter. Doesn't matter for the story though. The first book is more than 800 pages so I don't know if they can put every detail into 16 hours of TV. Unless you are a fast reader it's too late to finish the first book before the TV show starts anyway so I would read it along with the show. Watch one episode and read the book up to the point where the episode ended. I'm sure you will enjoy both reading and watching. Diana Gabaldon has a very good way of writing. She always throws those little things into the story that make you giggle no matter how serious the topic is. I doubt they can put such things on screen.
