The Downward Spiral is the second studio album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released March 8, 1994 I'm starting to believe that this songname titles is some kind of running gag the writers are doing this season. I doubt we'll ever find a meaning to it IAN SOMERHALDER MAKES HIS DIRECTORIAL DEBUT — After shutting off her humanity following the death of her mother, Caroline (Candice Accola) gives her friends an unexpected ultimatum. Not knowing how to handle the new Caroline, Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) attempt to intervene sets off a dangerous chain of events, leaving him and Elena (Nina Dobrev) in a race against the clock. Meanwhile, after seeking answers from Kai (guest star Chris Wood) about the prison world, Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) world is turned upside when he learns some devastating news about his mother Lily (guest star Annie Wersching). Elsewhere, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) finds himself becoming increasingly intrigued by Sarah Salvatore (guest star Tristan Mays), and Bonnie (Kat Graham) begins to struggle with the effects of being back in the real world. Ian Somerhalder directed the episode written by Brian Young and Caroline Dries (#616). Original airdate 3/12/2015.

I doubt we'll ever find a meaning to it I think they were just picking song titles from 1994 whose titles fit the theme (more or less) of the episode but not necessarily the lyrics.

Literal or figurative, it sounds like something definitive is going to happen: He couldn't believe how easy it was He put the gun into his face Bang So much blood from such a tiny little hole Problems do have solutions you know A lifetime of [effing] things up fixed In one determined flash Everything is blue Everything is blue in this world The deepest shade of mushroom blue All fuzzy spilling out of my head

Jeremy because of Bonnie? Stefan because of Elena? Caroline because of her mom? One of the witches to stop the merging?

It could be a failed plan with a traumatic outcome if taken figuratively. Plenty of those in TVD world.

Guess we have our answer to this song Kiki, Caroline off the rails on a destructive path. Other possibilities: finding out Mrs. Salvatore did something violent to end up in the prison world or Kai is back to his old self and has a destructive agenda. Maybe all three!

(More on the theories thread if you haven't made it there yet.)
