I do think it's done on purpose. The actors are professionals. I don't believe for a minute that they would let their personal feelings affect their job. An off day is one thing but to have someone continually show disinterest and melancholy is unacceptable when it's not part of the character is completely unacceptable. We've seen Stefan with Elena. We know they are soul mates and they belong together. They bring out the best in each other. If Stefan was able to just move on with Ivy (or whoever) and be just as happy and functional then SE would mean less. Even though DE was shown to love each other they were also portrayed as toxic and unhealthy. They aren't soul mate material. No one would ever want to spend their life seeking out a partner like Damon that brought such dysfunction and misery. If DE were in love and healthy with each other then that too would make SE less meaningful. I absolutely think they have to have Stefan continue being disengaged because he's not complete. We don't have the luxury of the journal writing anymore to get to Stefan's true feelings but eventually there is usually a scene that explains what he is going through. In s5 there was the 'what's the point of being good' speech and just before Damon came back they had Stefan reveal just how lost he was without his brother. Now we have Stefan not understanding why Caroline would love him but not much of why Stefan feels this way has been revealed - yet. Always the voice of reason, napoli. Thank you so much for this little amount of hope that the writers know what they are doing.
