no compulsion is not based on reality but since Elena got addicted to Damon (I cannot call this toxic relationship love) she couldn't see reality anymore. She forgot that this is the guy who killed her brother and hurt her friends all the time. She only saw his good side (if there is one) but now with the compulsion she can see what he really is. The guy who killed her brother. I have no problem with Elena loving Damon. It's ok for me if she loves them both. What was not ok for me is that through the sirebond and her addiction to Damon which followed the sirebond she forgot about Stefan and about the real life around her. She forgot about all her friends and could only see and care for Damon anymore. If this is taken away by compulsion and she will care about her friends again I don't care what Alaric did. Of course he altered her memory and clouded Damon's good side but the sirebond and her addiction to Damon did the same thing to Stefan and all her friends. Anyway I doubt this will last. If Stefan comes back he will be furious. Because free will was always the most valuable thing for him. He'll be very angry to know that Elena was compelled Since I don't care about Elena anyway I'm just glad we will not have to endure more sobbing Elena-episodes like the premiere for now I completely get what you're saying but I'm just concerned the writers will just flip Elena back once she's decompelled. Sort of how humanity-less Elena was supposed to see what the sire bond did yet nothing happened once she got her humanity back and the sire bond was broken. I agree that the sire bond phase wasn't based on reality - Stefan's love was erased in less than 48 hours and only Damon's love remained! That's not reality but by the time the sb was broken too much time had passed and those feelings intensified by the sire bond became her new reality and worked to get the story to where they needed it to be. Compulsion may work the same way if it lasts long enough. Once Elena has 'moved on' whether it's spending more time with her studies or meeting someone else, that void she would have had if the memories of loving Damon were still there will be replaced. But if Damon returns in a short time frame and she remembers him then it's DE love story uninterrupted. The only reason I believe they are going this route is to show how differently Elena is handling grief and memories versus when she was human and to show Stefan's reaction to this Damon-less Elena. There's no way that Stefan will go near Elena romantically knowing that she's had Damon's love erased. Of course they will have scenes together but from his side it will be friendship only. How's it even going to work anyway? Too many people know and have to modify their conversations. Elena's going to wonder why people want Damon back. People will slip up, talk about something Damon did that was good, and Elena won't get it. Even compelled she can put pieces together from other people that Damon isn't who she thinks he is. Somehow it will come out to Elena that she's compelled, and she won't understand why without the memories. Maybe she'll be the one to demand to have her memories back. However it happens, it will be interesting to find out if Elena is different given that time has passed and she has new memories. You're right napoli on both counts re: Stefan. One curious thought: will Elena feel the absence of her memories like Jeremy felt after Damon compelled/modified his memory of Vicky? Maybe not since Alaric modified so many other memories.

I don't think it will matter if everyone brings up Damon good actions to Elena. The memory with the love is gone and good feel stories about Damon won't recreate that love. With Jeremy they tried to make him happy by having him believe that Vicky was still alive. Finding out she was dead brought back all the pain. If someone tells Elena that Damon was the love of her life won't be enough to have the same affect on her that finding out Vicky was dead to Jeremy. As others have speculated its more than possible if she's not decompelled that the necklace will play a role in getting Elena to remember her love for Damon naturally. Even if its not my preferred plot line I can't imagine the show being done with DE just yet. If the writers don't change the rules of compulsion then Elena should fill a void exactly as Jeremy felt when they tried to compel Vicky away. It's a crappy way to have Elena deal with Damon's death but in all fairness the writers needed to continue to show the effects of the DE relationship having been toxic, controlling, consuming and co-dependent. The unhealthy aspect of their relationship didn't die when Damon died so it's fitting that Elena turned to drugs and is choosing the easy way (both are unhealthy ways) to manage her grief.

jennifer, I was just wondering that about Elena's compulsion vs Jeremy's. However, in later episodes, I got the sense that Jeremy was able to learn again about what had been erased from his memory, but he didn't ever really remember the memories himself? They were gone. In Elena's case, there are six other Originals who could influence her other than Ric. Likely they wouldn't be as considerate in their ministrations. Also is the effect of vampire compulsion not ultimately part of the magic that underlies vampirism? Suggesting an endgame possibility that magic could provide a solution. Of course if and when Damon returns, he could re-awaken the attraction even if not the memories himself. This episode established that Elena found Damon sexy and dangerous from their first meeting.

I don't have that much to add seeing that everyone deciphered the episode to the umpteenth degree on various fronts and positions. But I thought it was a solid episode, early season-esque in quality and demeanor, giving a bit of information, but not divulging too much. As I mentioned previously, I did NOT like the idea of Alaric compelling Elena to forget Damon. I think it's a total cop-out, and sends a bad message not only to their characters, but younger viewers as well. But they did it anyway, just like they always do -- and I'm beyond disappointed! But it did accomplished one thing though: we were finally able to get answers to questions about how Elena felt about Damon during her time with Stefan. And though those answers were somewhat eye-opening in nature, they were also predictable as well. Everyone knew how she felt about him, she was just incapable of admitting it to herself. So other than that, what else did Alaric's compulsion accomplished? Yes, she's a little more "sane" (according to certain fans) and "tolerable" now; able to live her life with less grief and despair. But what happens down the line? It's inevitable this will all come to a head at some point, and Stefan -- and more appropriately Damon -- will suffer because of it. So not only will this create unnecessary drama on the show, it also has the potential of dividing the brothers again, and the fandom, to a lesser extent. So I say again: what was the point of this? Cause I certainly don't see it. One other thing: Who is Enzo to chastise Stefan about his relationship with Damon? Did he see season three? Did he know what Stefan did to save him? Did he realize what he gave up in the process? Hint, Enzo: a lot! So before you go running your mouth, take off your Damon-colored glasses and get a clue, cause you have no idea what you're talking about. And BTW, you are NOT Damon, so stop trying to act that way. Killing an innocent girl cause Stefan made Caroline cry? Really dude? Is that how little life means to you? The nerve of this guy. At-least Damon "killed with a purpose", but you're just a pathetic lackey trying to fill someone else's shoes. Hey, Enzo, the shoes doesn't fit! Get another pair! Or better yet: grow one! Before I finish, I'll leave everyone with one thing: You can love multiple people, but you can only be "in love" with one person at a time. Elena may have loved Damon in season three, but she was still "in love" with Stefan. Only when she fell out of love with him, was she able to capitalize on her feelings for Damon.
