I am re-watching Season One. I have a few fuzzy moments. 1) Katherine's daughter Nadia did not refer to having any children. So what is Elena's connection to the Petrova bloodline. 2) Setting that aside, Katherine and Isobel were fairly ruthless characters after they transitioned. Is that why Elena's losing her heightened compassion? 3) At the beginning of Season Five, Elena is plenty concerned about Stefan, in comparison to her lack of reaction to his death at the end of the season. I have to parse thru the rest of Season Five, but seeing Season One, and remembering Stefan dying in 5x21, with Caroline, but so distant from Elena, almost made me bust out crying again. I don't think the doppelgängers need to be from one bloodline. I think something triggers the birth of one. Like a special spell or a comet or whatever. Or if one dies another one is born and everything got out of line when they started to become vampires and lived forever... I'm sure this will be explained sooner or later.

I just want to say happy birthday to the lovely Elena Gilbert. You're my absolute favorite character on the show, and despite everything you've been through, you've remained strong, and that is a testament to the tremendous person that you are. Have a great birthday and I'll see you next season.
Here's one of my favorite songs to commemorate the occasion: it's "look after you" by "The Fray." Hey, someone has to look after her.

Or if one dies another one is born and everything got out of line when they started to become vampires and lived forever... I'm sure this will be explained sooner or later. I wouldn't count on anymore explanation of doppelgangers. It was said that the doppelganger issue would be wrapped up by the end of Season 5 so the show could move on to different stories. Here's what's been gathered so far about doppelgangers being born: 1. Male doppelgangers aren't related. They pop up every century in different families. 2. "Petrova" doppelgangers are born every 500 years, and they are all descended from the same bloodline. Supposedly it didn't used to be this way, but the Original Witch caused Petrova doppelgangers to all be born into the same family when she used one to turn her family into vampires, and then killed that same doppelganger to curse Klaus. The Travelers came along to fulfill the doppelganger prophecy because Elena was the end of her line and Rebekah cut off that line by killing Elena. I think the Travelers initially intended to use Tom and Katherine, two humans, to break their curse, but then Katherine made a deal with them and gave them Stefan and Elena's blood so that they'd stop chasing her and help her put herself in Elena's body. I don't think Katherine knew everything that the Travelers were planning. I think they just waited for Katherine to get killed, and for Elena to be brought back, before they continued with their plan. The way Sloan reacted to Aaron's death made me wonder if she had some sympathy for Elena's situation. Sure Sloan seized the chance to use Augustine resources, but I think she also wanted to punish Damon for his behavior while Elena was sealed up in a corpse. I wonder what happened to Sloan when she died, if she got sucked into oblivion or if she just stayed on the Other Side long enough to get into someone else's body. She might have volunteered to be Markos' guinea pig so that she'd have a way out.

But tessa told stefan she'd watched thousands of Doppelgängers find each other. How if there is only one in a century or in 500 years?

Sorry, but I've always found this "sequence" by "no humanity Elena" so hilarious. I love how she just casually takes her clothes off without a care in the world, while a stunned and bewildered Stefan looks on. Haha! It's like it doesn't even bother her. Hmm... it's amazing what we're capable of when we don't care what people think. Funny, funny stuff! BTW, Stefan's facial expression in this: Hilarious!!!

Good to have everything in one place. Tho a few slips in accuracy. Tiki's grandfather remembered seeing Stefan in 1953, not 1963, for example. I had totally forgotten that Elena had killed both Alaric and Jeremy!

At-least one good thing came out of Nina leaving: an end to the Elena Gilbert rant thread! No offense to the site, but I always hated that.
