What did you like? A lot to like, quality episode with a consistent vision. Bamon. Damon fighting like hell to save Bonnie for herself above himself. Damon's speech recognizing how incredible Bonnie is: a series high point. Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham making it real with their performances. Loved the care that Matt and Damon both took to not hurt Bonnie. Stefan and Caroline telling each other some home truths -- though I'm not feeling it at all between them this season, and am actually rooting for Alaric, Caroline and the girls. Beautifully filmed night episode, every scene gorgeously framed, richly lit, glowing from the inside out, a palette of stained glass: reds, greens, browns. So carefully edited. It actually looked like The Vampire Diaries. There was a lot of action but it all made sense and supported the emotional narrative. Liked that it was back to the core cast, which is a very small group now, and that we were back in Mystic Falls. The claustrophobia kind of heightened the point that the gang may be running out of options. Possibly the best of the episodes that Paul Wesley has directed for The Vampire Diaries and it was nice that he got to work with a script that didn't suck. Have watched it three times already.
What did you not like? Damon ever so slightly channeling W C Fields with a few twitches, but that is really nitpicking.
What scene was most shocking? First two minutes on air LOL

This episode was really really good!!!!! There was alot of intensity and I loved the extreme Damon went on to getting Bonnie to wake up. I loved the fact he was willing to die to save her and that he told her to forgive him. I still dont buy the enzo and bonnie love fest but whatever. Caroline and Stefan look beautiful together. I loved their scenes. and Alaric and Caroline I dont buy it either.

Kat Graham was amazing this episode. I suppose she's been amazing since the beginning but when her character's story line sucks its hard to notice how amazing she is an actress. The dream-like sequence with Bonnie the cheerleader/vampire killer was so good and it was only 30s. I would watch that show instead of the weekly mess they deliver instead- 30s of badass in a dream is not enough.
I just don't buy Bonnie and Enzo. It was thrown together too quickly.
Damon saying he loves Bonnie the way Elena loves her produced the biggest eye roll in my life. I actually strained them and still haven't recovered. The writers blew off Bamon and completely missed they're potential as a great love story just to keep Delena pure? This is why TVD sucks. Elena and Bonnie will never, at least as described in the show, be alive at the same time. What a beautiful, complex, heart-wrenching and doomed love story Bamon could have been! To have all those emotions Damon and Bonnie both loving and missing Elena and turning to each other for comfort and then dealing with the guilt they feel once they've moved past the friendship zone. It could have been such a layered, complex and emotional story line - within the yo-yoing timeline (TVD screwed that up too). Instead they sack Bonnie with Damon 2.0 as a consolation prize even though there was no build up and it doesn't make any sense.
Caroline is also sounding like a consolation prize for Stefan. S5 when Stefan and Caroline were with the travelers I was actually starting to ship them together but then angry Caroline in s6 was punishing Stefan for who knows, oh yes, to create fake tension. I just don't buy their love or Alaric and Caroline' either. Now if they killed off Alaric, like when he's off on some Indiana Jones style dig that apparently he's old enough to have so many years of experience doing this, then Caroline can be a mom full time. That's the only ship I'm rooting for right now is Caroline and the girls without Alaric.
It's also hard to feel for Matt when the whole Penny relationship was in flashbacks and they had him be the one to kill her. They must be desperate for a sheriff if that level of incompetency gets you to the top. Its such a disrespectful way to treat the only human. They really couldn't come up with any better for Matt?

As noted in several online summaries of this episode, Stefan is not behaving characteristically. He is subtly making things worse. For example, he affirms Caroline's announcement that she is the first one who needs to get into the high risk situation of Bonnie's head to try to save her -- knowing that the huntress has a powerful psychic connection to her marked prey. Caroline comes out of it marked and needing to flee. Then he vervaines her -- did he get the dart from Matt -- and takes her to an airport hotel until she becomes convinced she needs to flee with him. His justification for the second act towards Caroline -- that he never should have listened to Elena, that's how he lost her -- is weirdly opposite to his supporting her to get into Bonnie's head in the first place. Are they trying to say that he finally learned something?
