I gave the episode a three. I loved stelena and nina saying goodbye, alaric was heartbreaking. Bonnie feather scene. This could have been amazing but they chose the wrong choice and now I need move forward.
I did not like delena dance being 14 minutes long jk. It was just annoying. The whole my death sealed the spell but my death released the heretics what the hell. Honestly the did not show us one heretic I am guessing they have not been cast yet.

The Opening: Well, that's one way to wipe out your entire supporting cast for the year. Good grief. Looks like more destruction by the witchpires is on the way if the last scene is true. I couldn't believe Alaric was left alone holding Jo. I was yelling at Damon to offer her blood because Elena can't use it with the cure in her system, but he didn't listen and it looked too late anyway. The entire sequence of Alaric, from holding Jo to facing Kai, was heartbreaking. Kudos to Matt Davis for a powerful performance. It bothered me at first that Tyler killed Liv, but then when he saved Alaric - so glad Liv made the offer and Tyler was brave enough to face being a werewolf again. It gave Michael Trevino a chance to flex his acting muscles too, something rare these days. Good luck Michael! The Goodbyes: Very nostalgic, loved the throwback moments. My favorite was the scene with Stefan and Elena. They both looked younger, and I like that Elena acknowledged how much Stefan's love meant to her, how he knew her better than anyone. Stefan had a sweet look on his face. My second favorite was with Matt, on Wickery Bridge, both when he refused to say goodbye and when he appeared as a deputy (or sheriff??). I also teared up when Elena told Bonnie and Caroline they would all get the lives they wanted, just at different times. The Rest: Damon chopping off Kai's head was perfect, as was the scene where he returned to Bonnie. I love those two together, although I'm liking the scenes with Matt & Bonnie too. I hope they continue to work together. Don't care about the witchpires at all yet. I'm more curious what will happen with Lily/Enzo.

The dance was a tad long but i didnt mind it. It reminded me of the last dance from Stepup (from miami and the mob lol) it seemed so familiar. I guess thats why they also interjected steroline in their scenes to bring it down a tad. And it was hard to watch the last Stelena scene bc it was like we were also officially saying goodbye to them. I have always loved nina and Paul together. As soon as he walked over with tears in his eyes n grabbed her hand, I was blinking 3x as fast to avoid the tears haha. But honestly I enjoyed Stefans hospital Speech about needing his brother more. And im ok with accepting steroline for stefan bc when you fall for someone after thinking you had already found your soulmate, its more intimate and special. They are part of the reason you can officially move on and away from that part of you. Youre. Not as blind as u went in the first time and it seems so healthy for stefan. And caroline. So I approve. Sent from my SM-G900T using pro boards As much as I wanted a Stefan/Elena ending, and will always think they were meant to be the true romantic arc of the series, it's realistic that Stefan has moved on after two years. I'd rather see him look happy again than pine for someone he really can't have now. He does need his brother more, and the best thing Elena did was to help bring them back together. Caroline! How could you let that perfect guy with a beautiful romantic offer walk out your door?

So as a wrap up I can really say for myself that season 6 made up for that messed up season 5... I am also very ...let's say curious abot Enzo, what the hell is this guy doing, teaming up with Lily, cos she gives him a purpose...I don't understand this guy, don't need to either...he is a bubonic plague, speaking of ...wow...how cool was the cliffhanger, looked a bit like post apocalyptic Mystic Falls. Now after some hours have passed - as I have already mentioned the backdoor last week - I have very coincidently found a German article hinting that Dobrev is already regretting her decision, as the roles offered to her are very rare ...so how clever that they put Elena in a 60 year sleep, that way after Matt the last human being has died and also Bonnie, Elena can be revived again...I am quoting my dream villain Klaus..."always have a backup plan ...backup alternative death, backup revival" On a sidenote: When I find that article again I will post it...don't want to come across as a vile obnoxious gossip girl

It's interesting to read your reactions. Here goes mine:
What I liked: Damon saving Bonnie, killing Kai. Elena calling him the love of her life. Their touches, kisses and pledges for the future as they were saying goodbye for now. The fact they didn't actually kill Elena. Bonnie doing her feathers magic again as a parting gift. Kat Graham and Matt Davis' performance from start to finish, just wow. Stefan's promise for Caroline that he would wait for her and how he has defined Elena's importance in his life. Tyler using his wolf powers with control and purpose in killing/weakening Kai as his last act. The menacing final scene.
What I didn't like: Putting Elena in a coffin. There was no hint her consciousness was fading. The only reason to lock her in the coffin and put her out of sight was because Nina is leaving the show. Far too contrived. Jeremy's token reappearance. If he had turned up, there should have been much more to it. For what it was, it was only disappointing. The disrespectful editing of Delena and Steroline scenes into a mashup again. The plot holes of mythology again: cloak spell disappears, BonnieElena spell sticks after death of the new heretic. Bonnie's given 60 years and no chance to see Jeremy.
What caught me off guard: The stylised dance routine. Hm.
Best quote: "Heads it is."

As Jer is one of my very fav characters on this show, I was glad to see him again, after reading your comment I am second guessing his appearance a bit...you are right...it was a bit short, just shoved in and I had hoped there would be a Jer/Bon scene too.

You would have thought they could have at least in the scene of the entire gang had Jeremy there for that and maybe hugging Bonnie. That sucks because those characters never really got closure.

I liked Jeremy too. His departure, just when they've equipped Bonnie with the means of escape, made no sense. The whole fiasco with the art school and not telling Elena the truth was just ridiculous. No phone calls, no reunion between Bonnie and Jeremy after her return: disrespectful writing. Jeremy should have been back already for the wedding or not turn up at all, because it was almost meaningless. His time with Elena was nearly as long as what Tyler got with her! Under the circumstances he should have given Alaric a more emotional hug, but you could almost hear the director go "chop, chop!"

I think Bon called Jer and talked to his answering machine because she reappeared two episodes after Steven R McQueen had left, that was all.

www.ew.com/recap/the-vampire-diaries-season-6-finale/4OMG, you guys have to read the comments. Skip the article itself, the comments are pure gold!!!! "What happens if Bonnie is out walking and dies when a tree branch hits her. Is there an alarm system in the coffin or does Elena have to Buffy her way out of the box?" "Rewritting of Stelena history to push Delena and Steroline continues, next thing you know, Stelena never happend, and it was't even Stefan, maybe that was just Silas being a troll."

It bugged me too how they left her in a coffin. I guess its supposed to be a ruse? But couldn't they put her somewhere less morbid? She's not dead! In 60 years they'll all be dead - it's possible - and Elena wakes up when Bonnie dies only to be stuck in some crypt with no way to get out. The funniest comment is from AG 'Rewritting of Stelena history to push Delena and Steroline continues, next thing you know, Stelena never happend, and it was't even Stefan, maybe that was just Silas being a troll.'

Okay, I gave it a four. I have only watched it once, I may grant it an upgrade.
The feels were just a little forced -- except for poor Alaric!! -- and I swallowed my tongue a bit during Stefan's Delena retcon. (I think we can predict what Julie Plec's and Kevin Williamson's original idea for the series finale might be.) My personal problem is when someone says goodbye, I suffer and then move on. We had heard enough in advance about Nina's departure that I think I had already moved on? However, when I do the season re-watch, I'm sure I'll turn on my humanity again -- at some point.
However, all that aside, I loved Stefan's real goodbye to Elena. I also loved his two exchanges with Caroline. The prediction of an apocalyptic near future for Mystic Falls was an interesting and more adult change in tone and echo from the books -- liked that both Matt and Damon were on guard for their hood. Loved that Damon definitively decapitated Kai -- LOL! That was great. It definitely felt like an end -- and a beginning. Do want to see what the season 7 opener brings!
The death of Jolaric was really cold. :( I like that folks on Twitter called bullcrap on the death of Jo and they are already #BringJoBack. I agree. I also thought Tyler smothering Liv was not romantic but rather gross. I am too old for that one. I liked Liv, too. Too bad they got rid of Jo, Liv and Luke. Liked them all.

How awesome was Kai last night ? Finally a villain (since Klaus) worthy of loving to hate. Turning himself into a vampire to kill his entire coven...I don't watch TO but this move beats anything Klaus did on TVD. Drinking his father's blood to complete the transition was icing on the wedding cake! Too soon ? Elena figured out when she turned human that calling 911 is how you help people but Damon needed Stefan to tell him to take her to a hospital? Elena giving Alaric advice on how to handle grief is a little to ironic given her drug induced breakdown over Damon's death. I don't like Parkwood in the least but Tyler killing Liv to trigger his werewolf gene was a little too much for me. I know she was going to die anyway but it was just...no. Matt Davis was great last night but Jo's death was empty for me. Jo’s character never grew on me and there was just too much leaked prior to the episode for her death to have an impact. The most disgusting scene of the night wasn’t the DE dance although it was weird and came in as a close second. It was the Steroline, Stefan the Defan and DE shipper talking mere inches from Elena’s comatose body. Stefan declaring that he needed Damon more than he needed Elena was the biggest joke and retcon . That wasn’t the story the writers have presented but I get that they need to set up for next year. Good luck with that writers. The other stars of the night other than Kai were Bonnie and Damon. Bonnie facing off with Kai on her own was brave and continues to show how much Bonnie sacrifices her own well-being for her friends. She was almost able to kill him but it was super cool how Kai healed himslef of the werewolf bite. Damon’s evolution of a character is finally happening and the best part is that Elena had nothing to do with it. While Damon was stalking Elena when she was still dating his brother his reaction to saving Bonnie over Elena was this: 2x18 Damon ‘Let me be clear about something. If it comes down to you and the witch again I will gladly let Bonnie die. I will always choose you.’ While Damon was dating Elena in s5 his reaction to saving Bonnie over Elena was this: 5x06 ‘Well today, Silas was going to bring her (Bonnie) back to life after he got the anchor. But you told my boyfriend, who has never put anyone’s life before mine including his own to kill Silas before he could do that.’ In s6, after spending quality time with Bonnie who challenges Damon to be a better person, versus Elena who just expects the worst from Damon and doesn’t challenge him to be better, we finally get to see Damon helping someone without the goal of getting into their pants. I’m not saying he’ll never want to get into Bonnie's pants I just don’t think that’s on Damon’s radar right now. I mean Elena just went asleep a few minutes after their romp in the barn so he should be good until later...That Elena knew this would be Damon’s response is complete BS and just another retcon to add to the list. Damon lopping off Kai's head, even though I love Kai, was awesome. I’m just so glad Elena didn’t tell Caroline to take care of Stefan and she finally acknowledged everything Bonnie has sacrificed. In SE’s goodbye Stefan didn’t even tell Elena that he loved her back. How many nails does their coffin need? It's okay to love someone as a friend. They're soul friends remember? The DE goodbye was nice until the dance. Ballroom dancing in the forest? Yeah, cause that was DE’s thing. I get that they couldn't have them screwing in a dream-like sequence in the middle of the road (cause that was totally their thing) but the dance was weird and too long. It also seemed to serve as a Steroline push instead of DE moment. It was just bizarre. The great thing about the goodbye is that it came off like a real DE goodbye. Hopefully it’s the last we’ve seen of DE and personally – GOOD RIDDANCE!
