Well, it is interesting that Elena did say that, though. She is still relatively new as a vampire. When Damon is not in Elena's life, there isn't anyone preventing her from taking up Stefan's long-view strategies about integrating with humans and living a human life. Stefan's approach is careful and contained. He knows that if he breaks his own rules, hundreds of humans could die. But perhaps living in Stefan's model never lets Elena forget her undead status. When Damon is in her life, Elena is attracted towards his more risk-taking intuitive view on vampire life. Damon lives in the moment. If he or someone he loves is threatened -- or if he is pissed off -- he just kills and he accepts the risk that he could be killed. By living in the moment -- Damon's way -- Elena can forget both that she died and forget that technically she could live forever. Very often I think back on that scene earlier on the season where Stefan finally got his pay cheque, walked in his house, put down the groceries he got for Ivy, and cracked open a beer. He tried to live a life bound by the same limitations as any human's. But was it working for him? No. He couldn't live that life without violence. In season one (I think) Stefan said Elena was the only person who made him feel he could forget his undead condition, with her, he said, he could forget that he was a vampire and just be himself. Without her--and, at that point in the beginning of Season Six, without Damon -- you had to wonder: what was he living for? Possibly the answer to that was Sarah Salvatore. Nice analysis demetra. Elena went from a struggling vampire at the end of S4, when she told Stefan he was the only vampire who sucked more than she did, to telling Jessie how much fun vampirism is a few episodes into S5. The only change was her relationship with Damon. I've always wanted to hear an explanation beyond 'Damon changed her', something that happened within Elena to explain how a thoughtful, loyal and introspective girl grew into a woman who needs to leave a hospital room to get air instead of celebrating with her best friend, or who shows no guilt toward Jo for helping to sacrifice her in order to save Liz. Your explanation of Elena choosing not only Damon but his lifestyle fits the bill. She wasn't running to something but away from herself, from her loss and pain of being the vampire she never wanted to be. I believe she truly loves Damon, but does she truly love herself when she's with him or is he an answer to her internal pain & struggles? It happened again this episode. Elena was confused and upset about Liz when she left the room, but when Damon followed, her answer was to avoid the situation and kiss Damon. I give credence to Elena needing drugs or having her memories compelled away to live without Damon - facing her own life is too painful. It was very symbolic. On a related note, it's hard to say why the show continues to poke at Delena like Kai did in this episode. They're going overboard with the toxic, dysfunctional, etc. labeling imo. Either it's a red herring, a 'love conquers all' trope or a serious message about who they are when they're together.

Well... if it's a "red herring" then it's about time to show some consequences and show that a toxic relationship is not good. If they want to go all Delena why do they bring this toxic, dysfunctional etc all the time? To make it different from Stelena? Well, Stelena was the perfect lovestory. Everything different is just not perfect anymore. I get it, they couldn't keep the triangle forever so they had to decide and they chose Delena and kicked everything Stelena out of the show to please Delena fans. But do they really make those fans happy by mentioning how toxic and dysfunctional and bad this relationship is in nearly every episode? I feel like the show got stuck in the middle. Delena is going nowhere. Either break it up or make it right but this break up and make up and toxic whatever thing is going on for 3 seasons now and it's getting boring

The first three seasons a lot of people were into Delena and the tension between those two/three was a big part of the show. And sure, at some point they had to either let Delena happen or "destroy" it and they did let it happen which is great. But I don't think this is what the Delena fans had in mind. It never felt like love IMHO, or at least a lot weaker than with Stefan. Maybe it would be the best thing for Elena to be single for a while and "channel her inner season 1 - 3 Elena" - I wonder what she would think of/say to season 4 - 6 Elena...
