Thought this was a fun episode overall, not the season's best but some great moments... maybe a 4?
Liked: - Kai sucking up the travelers' magic... so creepy but cool! And now everyone gets to go home!!!
- the Salvatore brothers homecoming was so awesome... The car, the hug, Stefan staying, their relief at being in their own house was palpable. That house really is a character in the story, so glad to see it back for real, not just in 1994.
-the girls in 2007... You could tell the actresses were consciously trying to act younger (like 14 year olds!) and it was really fun to watch.
- The show recognizing other forms of death than supernatural ones. Not sure I'm satisfied with the non-answer for why vampire blood can't cure cancer, but it was interesting to have the show acknowledge that something in the human world is far more powerful and deadly than any vampire or witch.
Didn't like: - More no-chemistry Steroline (but Candice's performance was heartbreaking)
- All the repetition: Caroline again telling Stefan how he ruined their friendship; Enzo again complaining but not really explaining why he specifically hates Stefan (this is really driving me crazy); Jo again wondering out loud if Alaric is her boyfriend; Luke/Liv again having the same conversation about duty to their coven. Wow, what a waste of time!
- the Enzo plotline because they haven't shown us a personal reason or a strong enough motive for Enzo to be SO hateful of Stefan. They've done nothing with Enzo's backstory! Why wait until more than halfway through the bloody season to do this? (Did anyone think he emphasized "Stefan's got a great girl after him" a bit more than the other 'reasons'? I wonder how much this revenge really has to do with Caroline.)
Favorite scene was definitely the brothers' homecoming. And Kai sucking up the magic. I guess this means Elena will never get her memories back? And never turn human again?Or could the barrier somehow be reimposed if Kai dies? I don't think so?
Definitely surprised by Kai's abducting Elena at the end. What does he want with her?

What does he want with her? That was actually the bit I was least surprised about. A villain marking Elena Gilbert as his most prized possession. What else is new? But (bringing this over from the spoiler thread.): I'm thinking Kai will offer Lenie the chance to become human again. How? I can't say right now, but i'm confident that the writers can make anything happen when they so wish (this ain't no praise.) I would love for Elena to become human again, so long as they don't use that chance to prove once and for all that Elena chooses Damon, no matter what. That would be the worst retcon ever done. I'll write my review of the episode when I have collected my thoughts.

Well vampire blood was introduced as a cure for injuries and open wounds. Cancer is a tumor that grows and eats your organs until you die. Vampire blood might heal the wounds caused by it but it cannot stop the tumor or make it disappear

That's exactly what I thought when I read Julie's tweet. They said if the witches merge they will be the most powerful witches of all. This whole vampire thing was something Esther (a witch) created so maybe the merged witch will have the power to cast a spell that will turn them human again. Maybe Kai will offer Elena a deal

I called it. Okay, it wasn't exactly as I said, but it's similar. As we saw last night, Jo and the gang are planning on finding a way to ensure her victory. I'm just a little proud because I was half-asleep when I wrote that.

Least successful script of the season IMHO. Very pedestrian throwback to the inadequacies of Season Five. Considering what actually happened as plot points it should have been so MUCH more engaging than it was.
Complete shoplift from Season Two when Elena is "gazing" at Damon.
Caroline's speech to Elena about Damon was such utter baloney it actually undermined the integrity of the whole episode.
There was absolutely no point to have flashbacks from both 2007 and 2009. WOW. Compared to how earlier episodes in the season were handled, the integration of the flashbacks to Bonnie's dilemma was actually sophomoric.
The first five minutes was simple -- boring -- exposition, very inexpertly delivered. Characters were just walking through their lines to the point when there should have been emotional high notes it just looked like bad acting.
Who cleaned up the Salvatore boarding house after Sarah totally trashed it, BTW? if Jeremy, good on him.
Re Liz--The idea that vampire blood can't cure cancer when it cured an underlying condition earlier in the season is simply unbelievable.
What I liked: A couple of decent shots of Stefan. Paul Wesley is still not being very effectively directed, but there were at least one or two moments when Stefan looked like himself.
I did like the plot point of Kai absorbing the magic of the Traveler spell. Too bad it was so poorly executed on tape.
Very disappointing episode to break on. I cannot even enumerate the inadequacies of this episode versus the last one.

With respect to Kai snatching Elena, maybe he sucked up the doppelganger mythology with the Traveler spell?! Kai needs Elena's blood. I have no idea what for, but, as I said, it comes with the spell LOL

Although I'm pretty sure the twin merge story will go through many versions before (if) it happens. After reading CD's spoilers, then watching the episode, it was clear one had nothing to do with the other, lol. At the moment I think they'd be crazy to kill off Kai. The next big bad is supposed to be Papa Parker and I have a feeling there's more to Kai's backstory.

I liked this episode ...gave it 5 points again. It wasn't spectacular as the last midseason finales, but it was very good imo. I liked everything about it, esp when Jer thought of Bon in front of the Christmas tree and they parallel montaged Bon in front of the tree as well... Liz Forbes having a glioblastoma, absolutely Buffytheft and soon the last parent of MF will be gone, so sad, I really liked Sheriff Liz. Loved the Damon/Alaric quarrels/banters. Kai sucking up the travellers magic, genius move! There wasn't anything I didn't like about this episode, it was slow paced, but the cliffhanger was gorgeous! Caroline and Matt are starting to loose my sympathies, Steffie is boring, either written boring or the actor is bored, I really don't know. Appreciate Tyler like always since season 2. Love the few Jer scenes, they give us. And as I have already pointed out, Damon is turning out to be my fav lead role this season. And I love Kai as a villain, he is a very good actor and the psychopath villain has made me hold my breath and grab a pillow out of suspense quite a few times already... And aaahhh!!! Poor Bon, pls come back soon from that hell you got stuck in, it is so sad to watch the poor girl stuck there all alone! There has to be more in store for her life than sacrificing herself and getting stuck!!! Cheers!

Since Jo's idea was brought up so early in the fight, I'm sure we're facing a roadful of twists. I hope there is more to Kai's story just as long as they don't transform him into a puppy with manpain (I don't think they will.)
