I don't think Damon's going to give up right away. The next episode previews prove that. He'll stalk, pester, possibly do something to Liam...but he can't force Elena to love him, and I don't believe he'll force himself on her physically. It's just a hunch, but this season is about the characters experiencing change, wanted and unwanted, hard won and easy outs. If Damon fits the pattern, he'll see the things he's doing are pushing Elena away, not pulling her in like they used to.

If they are serious about making DE epic and all that, then they'll make an effort to stop Damon from making the same mistakes he did before. For instance, after the chaos that ensued when Damon let Enzo almost-kill Jeremy last season (character regression), I doubt he'll hurt any of her beloved ones again lest they want the anti damon tag on tumblr to explode. This makes me think that he won't kill Liam. We'll see.
