I started this thread to discuss the dynamic between Klaus and Elijah as brothers. I thought there should be a place to talk about how they relate to each other, or how they affect each other, in or because of flashbacks or scenes on TVD or TO.
My current avatar is a gif image of Elijah looking a little bit surprised because Sabine called him by name. He didn't know that she'd heard of him. That conversation led to Elijah figuring out that Sabine was actually Celeste. He didn't think that a stranger should know his name or what he looks like, even if she's a witch.
I wonder if Klaus and Elijah have been living in each other's shadows a little bit. Elijah acts like he doesn't care if people notice the good or bad things that he does, but when I first saw that scene with Sabine, it occurred to me that next to Klaus, Elijah is someone who might be easily forgotten because he doesn't really leave his mark anywhere. When they were human, I think Elijah was jealous of Klaus for some reason. It could be that Klaus socialized more to escape his family and made a lot of friends, or he attracted more attention from women because of his appearance. Whatever it was, it made Elijah want whatever Klaus had.
Klaus, on the other hand, has always been aggressive and impulsive because even as a human, he carried the werewolf gene. Next to his tall, chivalrous brother, Klaus must have looked like a bad boy when he was human, whether he really was or not. No wonder a doppelganger got caught in a love triangle with them. I think Klaus felt like he could never be like his big brother, so he carved his own niche in the world. Any personality traits that made Klaus feel like he didn't compare to Elijah got exaggerated when he became a hybrid. Then he assumed the role of protector of his siblings, killing any lovers that might make Klaus' siblings leave him. Klaus has killed or tried to kill most of the people he loved, but he would never want to kill Elijah because out of that entire family, Elijah is the only one who will always love Klaus unconditionally.
Elijah's methods for trying to redeem Klaus aren't going to work. As long as Elijah keeps showing off who he is by condemning Klaus' behavior, Klaus will get irritated and want to act out even more. He might even lash out at Elijah. If Elijah tries to point out every time that Klaus shows signs of humanity, Klaus will take action to further differentiate himself from Elijah so that he has his own identity. Also, while Elijah is supposed to be trying to save Klaus, old issues still make him want to take things away from Klaus. Klaus won't be redeemed anytime soon with that going on.
