This was one of the worst episodes this season. The way they treated Kat, sending her to Hell, was completely unjustified.
Kat has done horrible things including this episode with continuing to hijack Elena's body and putting Stefan above her daughter but it still wasn't enough for me to have her sent to Hell. Going to Wes to get a cure for Nadia was not smart for the genius Petrova who is normally ten steps ahead of everyone else. It just didn't seem like something Kat would do. In the end when Nadia was at the boarding house Kat still could have chosen to save herself over saying good bye to her daughter. Kat was under no obligation to go to daughter (except out of normal decent behaviour which she did). Nadia would have died whether or not Kat was there so Kat could have saved herself but she didn't. Yes, she should have tried to contact Klaus and give up her identity as Katlena but Kat also had a good point that Klaus may have actually enjoyed letting Kat's daughter die so contacting Klaus was also not a guarantee to save Nadia.
Kat's last act, being with her daughter at her own detriment, was a selfless act and should have been enough to avoid Hell when you compare all the crappy stuff other characters have done.
The worst one is Tessa. Tessa created the other side to keep Silas and Amara (a couple that have found true love) apart and because of the other side each and every supernatural being that dies is denied peace. Tessa made Amara the anchor which is an excruciating experience while locking her away in stone for thousands of years. When Tessa takes corporeal form instead of destroying the other side so all deceased supernaturals can find peace and let Silas and Amara find some joy together in the afterlife, she finds a new anchor in Bonnie to ensure that Silas and Amara remain separated even in their death. And yet Tessa went to the other side instead of Hell?
Can someone please explain how this makes sense?
As much as I agree what Kat did to Elena was wrong, wasn't it also Elena who shoved the cure down Kat's throat? Elena could've just snapped her neck during the fight in 4x23. Then in s5 Elena stood by and watched while Damon fed Kat to Silas and thinking it would kill Kat instantly. Even though it didn't kill her right away this act did cause the aging process in Kat to speed up which ultimately caused her death.
Even with Kat stabbing Elena with the new virus was somewhat understandable. Kat's life as the doppelganger always had her on the run so she was never able to be with her love Stefan or make true amends with him. It was being on the run that caused her to be so vicious and manipulative in order to survive. Even though Elena chose a different path with Klaus as she gave herself over willingly, Elena only did so because she had Kat's story as the cautionary tale of what would happen to Elena's loved ones if she didn't submit to Klaus. Had Kat known at the time her family would have been butchered maybe Kat would have chosen differently. So I understand how Kat was jealous and angry at how much better Elena's life has turned out over her own. Even though Elena has had some bumps along the way she is always surrounded by a strong support system that Kat never had. It's not a nice or good quality to have but I understand what motivated Kat to do this to Elena.
I get that Kat had to die to give Nina a break from playing too many characters and that the doppelganger story line should be coming to an end soon but they could have done so much more with Kat's final act. They could have had Kat exchange her life for the cure for Nadia forcing the MF gang (Caroline
) to get the cure from Klaus and then Nadia, finally knowing how much her mother loved her, would have just left MF because her mother was longer around.
Caroline Dries said in an interview that one of the reasons they chose to send Kat to a dark place was to give her death permanence versus deaths such as Jeremy who was brought back and the ghost visits that happen from the other side every once in awhile. I don't buy it because they could have just not have Kat come back as a ghost. The only way I will be okay with Kat being sent to Hell is if this is an opening so that other Hell-worthy characters will also be joining Kat soon.
There were some scenes in this episode that I did enjoy. Having the gang work together to help Elena was refreshing.
I loved how Caroline told Tyler off. She sees the good in everyone and isn't that why Tyler loved Caroline to begin with? NEVER CHANGE CAROLINE! I get that it will take Tyler time to get over what happened but how does rubbing it in Caroline's face help?
Matt was so sweet and compassionate this episode. It's sad that I never had a chance to ship Madia until Nadia died. Way to go TVD writers!
Kat giving Nadia that beautiful memory of how Kat and her daughter should have spent their lives (had fate not intervened) and then Nadia standing behind Kat once she was a ghost and finally knowing how much Kat loved her was beautiful and left me crying like an uncontrollable baby!
Confession, I'm crying now too.
It didn't make sense that Damon would kill Wes. Torturing him was totally justified by Damon but by killing Wes it ruined Damon's chance of getting cured. I get that the writers have another plan for the cure but Damon doesn't know that.
I suppose it fits with Damon being impulsive but still I found it surprising.
Having Kat go out with a bang by truth bombing everyone versus the nastiness they all dished out on her deathbed a few episodes ago was fantastic.
In 2x1 Kat said to Stefan (while stabbing him in the gut): 'You hate me, huh? That sounds like the beginning of a love story Stefan and not the end of one.'
In this episode Kat says: 'Stefan, I love you. I've always loved you. (As Stefan stabs her in the gut) And I guess this is how our love story ends.'
The reference back to s2 was perfect
.
I was even okay with Stefan being the one to stab Kat because Stefan did it because it was the right thing to do and not because he took pleasure in hurting or killing Kat. What Stefan did needed to be done. I also think it was good because Kat raped and manipulated Stefan when he was very young so it was as though Stefan was finally putting an end to his abuser who had tried to seduce him once again under false pretenses. I hope this story is foreshadowing of what is to come with other characters.
Favourite quote was when Kat told Matt: 'I'll always miss the night we never spent together.' Don't we all!
