Yeah, I've noticed it, too. I don't know if it's intentional or if Paul just doesn't give a crap anymore. maybe he is just pissed the cinematographers keep shooting up his nostrils... right, demetra?

I am afraid he is the one telling the cinematographer to shoot him from that angle. I just watched the TV Guide clip. He looked magnificent. Now I will go join the voting party to get him the People's Choice Award. Maybe then he will love us again.

Ok I'm confused. Since I joined the general TVD fandom 18 months ago, people have been complaining about the show's pandering to the DE fans, who I assumed must be the majority. But I frequent several blogs, including mainstream ones like EW, Vulture and Price Peterson on TV.com, whose comments are overwhelmingly critical of the pro-Damon stance the writers have taken since S4, and want to see Stefan in a central role again. The comments on those sites resemble this board, in fact, and are often explicitly anti-Damon, which makes me think that support for Stefan (and SE to some extent) is far more popular than not, maybe even the view of the majority?
So I can't figure out why the writers hedged all their bets on Damon and DE... just because Twitter? But they probably read those other blogs that I mentioned as well--JP has even tweeted quotes from Price Peterson a few times. So there's no way they're unaware of the fans' current frustration with Stefan having nothing to do this season. Why not listen to that majority? Why not treat your main character like your main character?
Now that PW is confirmed for S7, his departure is no longer a possibly reason for marginalizing Stefan. The fans want him, PW obviously cares enough about the story to stay and see it through, and Stefan is a complex, interesting character with so much more story in him. So why are they doing this? All to reestablish DE? Based on the overwhelming mainstream support for Stefan, it just doesn't make any sense.

I think they are listening now but they are going to start sending damon off to bonnie and stelena back together and they are going to do that slowly. In season four I was blindsided I had no idea she would ever love damon choose damon even though now I am not sure why it was so shocking. They are doing the same thing to de right now. De is going to be blindsided. They like to shock. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I527 using proboards

I think the writers feel like its easier to write about Damon because of the fact that the character is written as having no real moral boundaries, accepting of his role as a vampire and being humorous about it. Even though their is some complexity to Damon especially through his relationship with Stefan and Katherine (in the first season), he really is the quintessential anti-hero badboy that every man wants to be and every woman wants to fix and be with. Stefan has more layers to him, the guilt of killing people as the ripper, guilt of turning his brother, being compelled and tricked by the woman he thought he loved etc.
Even though I think the first 3 seasons were excellent and some episodes from the rest, this show has made me appreciate Buffy and Angel so much more because Joss Whedon and his writers really took time in creating character development. Angel with all his brooding could be funny, scary etc, while this show occasionally through Paul Wesleys great acting gave Stefans character some depth more than the typical hero vampire. Paul is a great actor but I have (particularly this last episode) felt that he seems so uninterested, like he wants the scene to end as fast as possible. Hopefully they can finally come to a conclusion regarding DE and focus on other relationships (dont have to be romantic), work on the storyline and try to give the fans a good show again.
