I'd be mad too if the list of characters my character interacted it was dwindling too. This is 3 more characters that are going, leaving him once again with just a handful (Stefan, Elena, Jeremy, Matt, Caroline) to go back and forth with, some who are already rare when it comes to conversations. Yeah, the show can bring in new blood, new characters, but with my expectations, really, how long will these new characters last? A few episodes before they're killed off or just 'disappear' like how Meredith and April have done recently. Liz is hardly there anymore and Damon used to interact with her a lot. For the most part, he's stuck mainly with the characters of Elena and Stefan for a lot of his development. So yeah, I'd be pissed too if Klaus and Bekah, 2 of the people he's had quite a bit of screen time with over the past 2 seasons, were going.
My take on that at least. I love that the Originals are getting their own show and expanding the universe but from looking at TVD and Ian's POV, not Damon's, I see the complaint if you want to be a bit more diverse in who you interact with and build your character.

Think about it: Paul is getting to play Silas now, offering a different range for his skills and Nina already has Elena-Katherine + a future Tatia if we go into the doppelganger stuff, same for Paul. Joseph, Daniel and Claire are taking their characters to a new show where they get to explore the history of their characters more while developing them further without the triangle getting in the way of screentime/development.
Ian/Damon has what at this point? None of that. Out of the 3 leads, he's got the short end of the stick. Sure, he's with Elena now but she's going to college, something he really can't do like Stefan and Co. who are in that age range without looking odd I guess. I don't know. I just expect more of the same from Damon/Ian (Elena, Stefan, problem solving) while others get to hit a new milestone with their characters or get to stretch their acting legs some more. Elena interacts with a wider range of people, Stefan does and most of who Damon has interacted with outside the mains have been killed off.
Ian really should just take it up with the creative team to expand the cast a bit more and to have more regulars/recurring characters that *DON'T* get killed off so everyone can benefit from more relationships and development.

Well that's why I was looking forward to seeing Damon be the one to turn human because it would've gave ian something else to play with and some type of character development for Damon. Hopefully him being Elenas boyfriend can give him a different perspective

Well, Nina snatched that carrot for Katherine. She got to try some stuff out with Elena becoming a Vampire and now she gets to do the same this upcoming season with Katherine, the cold-hearted 'B', becoming human and vulnerable after 500+ years. Entirely new journey for her.
Honestly, Damon/Ian has little to nothing going forward. Most of the crap in the tail end of last season was him simply being worried that once the bond was broken or Elena turned her emotions back on, she wouldn't love/be with him cause her judgement was clouded. That was it. That's what others pointed out to him. Now that she chose him, what's on his plate? That plate looks mighty damn clean.
Paul has the Silas stuff early on before Stefan is back in the picture and he doubles down on 2 roles, Nina gets to still fine tune Elena while taking Katherine in an entirely different direction, Matt is given a new angle with a relationship with Bekah and being out of school with his whole life ahead of him now, Jeremy & Bonnie have to figure out Bonnie's situation and Jeremy himself is now back from the dead, Caroline is getting Tyler back to pick up where they left off and who knows where that leads from there. Oh, can't forget college for everyone sans Matt (does the town think Jeremy is dead?).
Hell, if the season didn't end the way it did and I was Ian, I'd say move me to NO with the others for a change up for a season or half a season. New location, new characters to interact with and interacting with old ones outside of the "I'm plotting to kill you" angle.
EDIT: As for being Elena's boyfriend now, I simply don't expect much. One of my gripes with his character has been how he's been obsessed with Elena, pining for her and so forth when she was with his brother. Now that he's got her, I don't expect much different outside of him not worrying about the bond anymore. He's pretty much there to cuddle/kiss now and wait for trouble to come around before he gets anything to work with.
It's weird. I wasn't much of a fan of Stefan from the outset of the series but Damon has grown kind of tiring on me cause of all the Elena stuff. Damon took a few steps down as far as interesting goes and Stefan kind of moved up this past season being separated from Elena and hanging out with Bekah, now he has the Silas/doppelganger storyline. As long as it doesn't turn out like the poorly handled Ripper storyline, for the 2nd time now, I'm heading into a season looking forward to what happens with Stefan.

Ian promoted himself as the sexy lascivious (right word??) guy in interviews and at conventions. Everything about Damon and about Ian was 50shades of grey 'ish lately and that's what Damon is reduced to now. All he does is hot sex with Elena and his eyething. I used to love Damon because of his cool comments and his confidence but now he is just Elena's armcandy somehow. Every character had a storyline once or more than once except Damon.. well apart from the opening the tomb storyline in season 1. So I can understand what Ian means but he should keep his opinion for himself and not critizise Julie (his boss) and the new show of the company he is working for. That's something he just shouldn't do in public especially not at a time where CW is promoting The Originals like crazy and telling us how good it is.

He's just kind of turned into Everything Elena and kind of went soft…I really hope we can see much more of him now in season 5. Its weird because Ian is kind of the voice for TVD as far as in conventions and stuff he's the one taking the questions seriously while the other actors have used comic relief to deal with some of the bull they feel the writers have done with the story etc

Well maybe they are trying to take him away from the "adult" characters of the show. As we know when Damon was trying to hide being vampire he had to play older then Stefan, which had him interact with older characters. Now, though he will most likely be able to interact with the younger characters being that he is dating Elena. He will most likely get interact with Jeremy (I won't say how much I dislike that) but if he does build on that relationship it could help him have to grow as a character and maybe help in peoples mind (like my own) that he can actually care about someone like Jeremy. BUT I think Damon needs to be more apart of the gang and the best way to do that is to get him away from the "adults" Does that make sense? I still do wish he was the human one. That would have been a good story for him.

I think he will be more of a protective person for Jeremy if he likes it or not. especially with the whole people dont like jeremy right now. and all the characters Damon has mostly interacted with have either died or left except Liz who barely shows up anyway.
it would be interesting to see Damon get a job at the highschool or something haha
