Beautiful! Stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nina looks so beautiful here. Thanks deb. I agree deb, that's the Elena I want back. Have you noticed Elena doesn't simile anymore... she hasn't since the SB in S4. Plenty of ILU's for Damon, but no "you make me happy". Damon is Elena's addiction, (a behavior once indulged, can never be satiated) that is exactly how DE has been represented. Elena's starting the 12 step program by realizing how toxic their relationship is for her. Elena admits her addiction in 516. D: "I thought you broke my heart, so I ripped open Arron's neck, that's how much control you have over me" E: "and I'm still here that's how much control you have over me" and again in 517 when she tell Damon she wouldn't be able to resist taking his hand on the car ride.....she's finally realizes she has no control...who says the SB is over. LOL

I always get the feeling that Elena looks much more beautiful in the SE scenes than in the DE ones too, shoe20. It's like, the scenes have more light, her hair looks better... Maybe it's just my SE eyes, but that's how I see it and it's very clear to me...

LOL Elena didn't smile that much to begin with (mainly because of all the horrible things she's been through. Can't really blame the girl.), but she definitely smiled more when she was with Stefan. That's for sure. She may claim that Damon makes her happy, but she rarely ever shows it. Sadly, she's been too busy dealing with his messes to be happy about anything else. Yes, they are a co-dependent couple. And judging by his recent "behavior," Damon more so than Elena. Unless the writers really delve into their relationship with an interest in examining their issues and solving them, I see no point in them being together. They make no sense otherwise. Don't let me get started on the Sire Bond. (One of the worst decisions the show has ever made. Second only to Silas telling "knock-knock" jokes. Ugh, what the hell were they thinking?) It's the last thing I want to see happen on this show. But I don't think that is the case though. I think she's just in a bad place right now. Hopefully she wises up and corrects things before it's too late.

It's often very dark, and sometimes you can't really see the actors properly. It's certainly not doing them any favors that's for sure.

It's one of my big gripes. A lot of shoe string budget series suffer the lighting problem. Sound sometimes sucks too. LOL

I guess they keep forgetting we actually want to see the characters.

I'm not sure if I'm a Stelena shipper, but I agree that Stefan made Elena happier than Damon did. Elena actually admitted when she chose Damon that it was probably the worst decision she'll ever make. I can't help but wonder if Elena chose Damon not because she loved him, but because she felt that she couldn't get back what she had with Stefan and she wanted to hold onto one of the Salvatore brothers. I think what's going on now is that Elena no longer feels anything romantic for Damon, but she's still desperately clinging to the past. She's afraid to face what Katherine did to her and move on. Her hallucinations in 516 might have been from the virus, but they were dead-on, almost psychic. Something could be going on inside of Elena that hasn't been addressed on-screen yet.
A huge concern of mine is that Elena could be stuck between the Salvatore brothers because she's a doppelganger. Markos said that the prophecy has been bastardized over the centuries. It's possible that Elena can't help repeating a romantic pattern that Katherine started after Katherine repeated a pattern that Tatia started. Now that Elena has been with both brothers, and even had Klaus and Elijah in her life briefly, it's time to move on, but the doppelganger in her might not know what to do. The fact that she's only 19 and she's been through so much can't be helpful. This is why I'm not so interested in Episode 520 as I am in 521, when Stefan and Elena get a break from being controlled and they can better analyze what's happening to them. I don't like the Travelers, but in my opinion, a voluntary body switch with another living person would be a way for Elena to escape being a doppelganger. I think it's what she is that messed up her life so much. I re-watched the episode once when Klaus' curse was broken. I forgot how Elena apologized to Jenna for failing her by lying to her and getting mixed up with vampires. Yet Elena can't help being around Stefan and Damon. Something is wrong there.

I am re-watching Season One. I have a few fuzzy moments. 1) Katherine's daughter Nadia did not refer to having any children. So what is Elena's connection to the Petrova bloodline. 2) Setting that aside, Katherine and Isobel were fairly ruthless characters after they transitioned. Is that why Elena's losing her heightened compassion? 3) At the beginning of Season Five, Elena is plenty concerned about Stefan, in comparison to her lack of reaction to his death at the end of the season. I have to parse thru the rest of Season Five, but seeing Season One, and remembering Stefan dying in 5x21, with Caroline, but so distant from Elena, almost made me bust out crying again.

I have to parse thru the rest of Season Five, but seeing Season One, and remembering Stefan dying in 5x21, with Caroline, but so distant from Elena, almost made me bust out crying again. 1) This has bothered me too. Nadia was supposed to be consumed by her search for her mother. She could have slept with someone and gotten pregnant by mistake, and then she gave the baby up for adoption. Sure Nadia felt like she was abandoned by her mother and shouldn't want to abandon her own child, but she was also a very selfish character who was willing to step on anyone to be with her mother. 2) Isobel's humanity was turned off. Elena sort of reminded me of Isobel when Elena was without any emotion. Nina Dobrev might have utilized that memory while playing Elena in that situation. Katherine was born into a traveler family and raised by a very cold traveler who took her child away and exiled her from her family and her home. I wouldn't blame Klaus for Katherine's behavior because there's enough evidence that he had a life and only went after Katherine when she did things to provoke him. Katherine looked a little wounded after hearing that Klaus drew pictures for Caroline, which makes me wonder if Katherine was a little infatuated with Klaus. She was twisted and either born sick or raised in a way that made her twisted. Elena was raised by a loving family. Her ability to love and her instinct to protect others got exaggerated when she became a vampire. The sire bond might be broken, but Elena loved Damon so much that she was willing to forgive him for trying to kill her own brother. I'm pretty sure Katherine was incapable of love, and Isobel could barely feel anything at all, but Elena probably feels too much. 3) Like I said, Elena feels too much, and one of the feelings that got exaggerated was survivor's guilt. Elena was in shock over Stefan's death in Episode 21, and even if she was upset, she wouldn't have gone into a murderous rage like Caroline did because that's not who Elena is. Witches are technically human, and Elena only killed humans when her humanity was off. She would never kill someone just for leverage. Luke might have tried to push Stefan into offering his own life in Elena's place, but it was Elena who would have been killed if not for the Travelers' spell, and she never tries to avenge her own death. She only looks for revenge when someone she loves has been murdered, and even then she can't follow through with it. Katherine said that Elena had a chance to kill her for killing Jeremy, and asked Elena why she just made her human. Elena said that she didn't want to kill Katherine. At the time, no one knew the effects of the cure, except maybe Klaus. Something he said to Rebekah made me wonder if he knew the cure was just another way to kill vampires. I think the question here isn't why Elena reacted a certain way to Stefan's death. The question is what changed before Episode 21 to make Stefan want to let Elena get killed in front of him. Regardless of whatever Stefan feels for Elena, he is not the hero some fans believe him to be. He's changed a lot.

Thanks, @seiwriter. I think that at that moment, Stefan was aware of how physically weak he was, of how weak they both were. He COULDN'T save Elena. That's partly the reason for the demonstration of his inability to access vamp powers earlier in the episode when he and Elena are walking down the road. Also, he had been successively tortured by blood by the Travelers prior to the blood draining -- I am remembering his acknowledgement of his weakness to Caroline in the junkyard car. His death at the end of 5x21 was the outcome of a moment when he forgot his weakened state, by accident, protecting Caroline.

Of course Stefan would never willingly let Elena die without a fight. Not only was he weakened from having most of his blood drained but it was also shown that they were not able to replenish (remember the squirrel hunting) and Stefan was also being held down by Luke's witchy powers while Liv was trying to kill Elena.

Stefan had a b$#%& of a year. First the love of his life picked his brother. Then he spent three months captured starving and drowning. Then Quetsiya retook him prisoner and fried his brain. The Travelers captured him and bled him out for days at a time--twice. In the middle there, the same Travelers tortured him for days. Then a Traveler reached in his chest and yanked out his heart - to death. Then he re-lost Lexi. And Bonnie. And Damon. And he can't go home. On the plus side -- he did graduate high school. Again.
