Enzo: “He (Stefan) abandoned his brother” If Stefan was the selfish ahole that some like to portray him to be, then his perfect moment to be the most selfish brother ever would have been end of season 2 and just letting Damon die of the werewolf bite. Damon dies from his own impulsive actions and Stefan gets to ride off into the sunset with the girl. But he didn't. He gave up his happiness/freedom to save his brother, any argument otherwise is invalid.

Well everything happens for a reason. Yes Damon was wrong to force his blood on Elena, but he did it to save her life, and the repercussions of that were Damon getting the werewolf bite after he tried to atone for that and rectify his mistake. Damon was ready to face the ultimate consequence for that, and took of his ring and faced the sun, but Stefan intervened. Stefan did the same thing a few months later, he also forced his blood on Elena, then threatened to kill her by driving her off that bridge, only his motivations were entirely different. Stefan can't live without Damon, that has been shown time and time again. He forced Damon's transition, he has saved him over and over, and when he was facing an eternity without his brother, he crumbled, he was lost. He never fought for Elena this way, willing to do whatever it took to keep her alive. Stefan without Damon is without purpose, that is his motivation for saving Damon's life. Damon saves Stefan because he loves him, not because he needs him. The brother bond is complex and beautiful when shown properly, and they have had some moments of TV gold, but I won't ever buy it completely until Stefan learns to love Damon for himself, and not as a crutch for him to lean on throughout eternity, or a scapegoat to project his own failings on to, in order to feel better about himself. They are vampires, and during that time they have faced some truly awful things together, and separately, that have changed them over time. One chooses to embrace them, and one chooses to try and turn the clock back, but that can't happen. Nothing can change the past, no amount of guilt or brooding can ever erase what they have both done in the past. For Defan to emerge as brothers, they have to re connect without the past, and draw a line under all that has gone before, but that is just me being an optimist. Stefan is hiding yet another secret, and I will wager that it goes deeper that what it seems at the moment.
