Two days later, I am still not very happy with the choice that was made. I know they put years of tarnish on Stefan's character to buff up the gleam on Damon's but Damon's character should have been the one to choose redemption through sacrifice. Damon should have been the one whose ghost said goodbye to Elena's spirit in suspension and then walked through the light to meet up with his buddy, Enzo. At the end of Season Six, before Elena was put to sleep, Damon and Elena had already shared their "matrimonial" bed.
Both Katherine and Stefan were drawn to each other in 1864 because of the doppelganger curse. Stefan wasn't responsible for that -- he was cursed. Stefan also inherited the tendency to be a Ripper, it was genetic. Damon wasn't under a curse to fall in love with Katherine, like Elena's birth mother, he sought out transformation to be a vampire -- "it was just supposed to me!" -- and he had no genetic predisposition for being a rat bastard, he chose to be one. It wasn't Stefan's responsibility to take down Katherine -- he didn't search for her for 145 years -- it was Damon's.
Damon did make the choice to be a better man -- but his choice wasn't honoured. It really burns me how devastated every character was supposed to be due to Damon's "death" at the beginning of Season Six but everyone links arms and goes on with their lives when Stefan dies. NOT HAPPY.

I liked the ending but was confused slightly in the Stefan and Lexi scene. Does this mean they hooked up on the other side?

I'm a little late to the party with this idea, buy it dawned on me yesterday; how did Damon and Elena have a happily ever after if he took the cure? If anything he shouldn't have made it past 6 months...
Four months later and I still hate the finale and only seen it that once.
I'll just stick with the fan fiction until it's not updated anymore.

I think the explanation was that (for some unknown reason) no one drank the cure from Damon, therefore he continued to live out what remained of what would have been his natural lifespan. PS I totally agree with you about the finale. I had pre-ordered but now have not even unwrapped the DVD of the season. The ending still makes no sense.

For me the series ended halfway through season 6. Anything after that is bull crap. I had high hopes when I heard Kevin Williamson was coming back, but it actually made it worse :-( What really gets me mad is Elena leaving "sealed the deal" for the finale. Nina Dobrev is the reason Stefan died and Damon got the happily ever after

Nina Dobrev is the reason Stefan died and Damon got the happily ever after I feel your pain. I think what I heard was that Elena chose Damon because there was no time to make a credible reversal. Also it really wasn't a choice because Stefan was already dead when she was awakened by Bonnie. In my opinion, Stefan died because there was some presumption at the producer level that after eight years of vampire behaviour, at least one of the Salvatore brothers had to die, and I don't think that had anything to do with Nina Dobrev. I continue to question the presumption, however. When a series goes on eight years, and the lead males become grownup men, there seemed to be a desire to break through the boundaries of the young adult genre of horror ROMANCE that was The Vampire Diaries. Hence the gross mirroring story line of the Sirens from Season Eight. They are immortal female seductresses, very beautiful, that compel and eat human beings. Clearly they are bad. They were also groomed and compelled to be bad by Cade. But if what they do is bad, why are we rooting for the Salvatore brothers? I'll tell you why: BECAUSE. Because those were the rules for EIGHT YEARS. This malarkey that "Damon was the better man" ipso facto he deserved to live out his human life is just that: malarkey. If one had to die, they both had to die. Secondly, Caroline doesn't get Stefan. Instead she gets her "real" life with Ric and the kids. Because she is okay that Stefan chose to die, I'm supposed to be okay with it. Well, I'M NOT. And, while I am perfectly fine about the conditions of my real life, I think it would be absurd to expect the genre proposals of young adult horror romance fiction to mirror them, and so, I am still pissed off about it. LOL. Nothing else to do but rewrite the ending to suit my own imagination. Stefan lives on as a human, Damon remains a vampire, and two years later, Elena and Stefan get married and have kids. The end.
