What did I like? This week again -- a lot!! I thought the direction was great, a counterpoint to last week's, which was also excellent. Julie's episode last week really irised in on Damon and Stefan, of course, I was totally into it, and enjoyed the feels and the visuals immensely!! This week's episode was more external. Not better -- but different in tone. I liked the contrast. I did not know what was going to happen. The action sequences felt real. Nice movie feel and intensity in the performances. Not soap-like, except in the scenes with Valerie and Stefan, in which I am not invested. This episode also had a great look with lots of outdoor scenes and sunlight, the actors looked a lot more real. I liked Paul Wesley's performance of Ambrose. He felt genuinely dangerous, possibly he was what Silas should have been, a demonstrable villain. I will miss Marty btw, and I enjoyed the actor's performance. I also liked the way Ian Somerhalder played Damon this week, he was a little less controlled. Bonnie's scenes were great, Kat does a wonderful job of keeping it real. Even Enzo was pretty solid, finally had a scene that matched intensity with credibility (levelling the gun at Rayna). I thought Ric read very well, considering his former investment in the Scooby Doo gang centred mostly on his care and protection of Elena and Jeremy, and indicated the damage done by Jo's loss. Good reckoning for Damon. Very good episode. I would like to see more from this director next year.
What did I not like? "The Philippines. Two years ago."
Caught off guard? When Ambrose t-boned the ambulance!
The thing I missed: When did we see Stefan's scar disappear? Now that the Phoenix Stone and the sword have been destroyed -- is that why he's free to go back to Caroline? I watched last week's episode four times for the enjoyment of it. But in this week's episode, was there a moment when Stefan found himself back in his body and realized the scar was gone? Maybe it disappeared when his soul was finally reunited with his body as happened to Julien? Also, looking forward, why SHOULD Caroline have a problem with Stefan's decision to stay clear of Dallas not only to protect her but to protect the babies? He was protecting Caroline and the babies. End of.
