The Originals' Boss: Why Elijah & Finn Will Visit Mystic Falls, What's Next For Klaus & Hayley
Klaus and Hayley aren't the only ones taking a break from New Orleans in an upcoming episode of "The Originals." While The CW drama will be checking in on where Hope's hybrid mom and dad are in next Friday's episode, the following week – on the April 8 episode of "The Originals," titled "Behind the Black Horizon" – two members of the Mikaelson family are going to Mystic Falls. And while they are there, they'll encounter a character from "The Vampire Diaries" – Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig). " know the fans -- they love the shared universe and they love to see that these characters still interact in the same big wide world and if Matt is interacting with Elijah -- that's a reminder that these characters still function in the same place," "The Originals" Executive Producer Michael Narducci told Access Hollywood. "For me, as a creator, what's really exciting is that Matt was the one who killed Finn in Season 3 with a white oak stake and so now it's Finn, who has recently been brought back through magic to rejoin his family, [who] is coming face-to-face with the guy who killed him. And I think that that's interesting and it's also interesting as a reminder that even though he's just a human being, Matt Donovan's a tough guy who, when push comes to shove, given the right weapons, can even take down an Original, so I thought that was pretty cool."
The kidnapping of Mikaelson sister Freya is instrumental in leading the two brothers to Mystic Falls.
"Without giving away too many spoilers, basically Freya finds herself in a position where she is drawn back against her will to the site where Esther created the family," Narducci said.
Joseph Morgan, who plays Klaus, directed the episode.
"That was also part of the fun, was to give Joseph an opportunity to work with actors he was very familiar with and a location he would remember fondly and probably has his own ideas about how to shoot. And I have to say, I really cannot say enough about how amazing Joseph did with this opportunity," Narducci told Access. "He is an incredible director and everyone I talked to, from our actors to our crew, was truly impressed by how prepared he was and his strong point of view and his visual stylings and he just had a really impressive take on our world and it's a great episode."
Only a portion of the April 8 episode of "The Originals" will be set in Mystic Falls, as there are plenty of other storylines to follow, including the deepening drama with the recently returned and bloodthirsty Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic), and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Klaus investigating something related to Lucien (Andrew Lees).
Before all that happens though, next Friday's episode of "The Originals" is on the way and it will feature some interesting interactions between Hayley and Klaus. Just don't expect the parents, who are attempting to disappear, to be living the high life.
"Everybody would expect Klaus Mikaelson, who can compel anyone and who's used to really lavish accommodations and being able to do whatever he wants -- you might find him at the penthouse of a beautiful high rise in Downtown Manhattan. But instead, Hayley goes the other way. 'We're trying to hide from people who want their revenge against you and who knows what they'll do, so we're just going to disappear and we're going to embrace the werewolf side of the hybrid nature.' And she takes him back to… her old stomping grounds from back in the day before she even came into contact with Tyler," Narducci said of the April 1 episode.
Their journey will take them to the place where Hayley discovered "what it means to be a werewolf," the EP said. Klaus and Hayley will also get into a long overdue parenting discussion.
"We're going to see basically Hayley and Klaus have a pretty intense debate over what's best for their family, what's best for them, and what's best for their child and it's kind of a turning point in their relationship and a kind of philosophical debate about how they will raise their daughter," he said. "I find it fascinating. I think the acting in that story line is just phenomenal. They really did a great job, and it's been a story line that we have wanted to address for a very long time and this was a great opportunity to do it and I really enjoyed seeing those two together."
Although they are trying to stay in hiding (from all of those coming for Klaus now that his sire line has been broken), there probably won't be any role playing when they encounter others.
"It's a little bit of, 'We're two badasses and you guys shouldn't ask a lot of questions.' It's a little bit of that. They're not introducing each other as their significant others or anything like that, but they are in this together and they have to figure out a way to relate to one another," he said. "And they haven't spent a lot of time together in a while, so this was an opportunity to put them on a road trip, put them together, have Klaus see a little bit more about Hayley's life before he knew her and what that might mean for going forward with regard to how they would raise their daughter together," Narducci said.
"The Originals" returns next Friday at 9/8c on The CW.

The Originals' Joseph Morgan Sorts Out Klaus' Complicated Feelings for Hayley, Caroline and (So Many) Others
For a guy who claims to be unlovable, The Originals‘ Klaus Mikaelson sure does have a lot of special ladies in his life. Friday’s episode (The CW, 9/8c) marks star Joseph Morgan‘s first turn as director — he knows actors usually have to wait until at least Season 5 to direct an episode, but as he says, “This is my season five” as Klaus — and while we had him on the horn, we used the opportunity to sort out his character’s many complicated relationships, which only seem to get messier by the week. “I suppose everybody has a slightly different take on it, from the fans to the writers to the actors,” Morgan tells TVLine. “But my take on it is this: There’s not one woman that Klaus is like, ‘That’s who I love! It’s definitely her above everyone else!'” And that “her” could mean any number of people, from Hayley, the mother of his child, to Caroline, the one that got away, to Cami, the woman who sees the man inside the monster. So… why haven’t any of these relationships stuck? “He’s a tortured soul, and that’s why he doesn’t have a relationship that works with any of them,” Morgan concedes. “If you really think about it, we haven’t seen him have a single relationship that lasts in the whole course of him being on both [The Originals and The Vampire Diaries]. I think that speaks volumes.” tvline.com/2016/04/08/the-originals-spoilers-klaus-caroline-season-3-relationships/#more-701390

THE ORIGINALS’ Joseph Morgan Talks Going Behind the Camera to Direct THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Crossover
Joseph Morgan has played it all, from human Viking warrior to Original vampire to the first vampire-werewolf hybrid to reluctant father … and now he’s taking on a new role: director. The Originals star stepped behind the camera for tonight’s mini crossover with The Vampire Diaries, and his directorial debut was a huge learning experience for him. “I’m really thrilled and excited for everyone to see it after all that work,” Morgan tells Nerdist. “It’s great for it to finally be out there.” While Morgan knows The Originals inside and out after starring on it for almost three years (not including his time playing Klaus on The Vampire Diaries for two years before that), he was surprised by how supportive everyone on set was when it came to his first time directing an episode. “It’s not like I wasn’t expecting them to be supportive, but just the way the cast especially went above and beyond to make sure it was a terrific episode, and were very open to my ideas and had ideas of their own, it was very exciting to me,” Morgan says. “But the most challenging thing was fighting the daylight. I had three big days that were daylight-dependent, where we were chasing the sun literally all day. There was really a scramble to get everything we needed for these big sequences, six actors in the woods with stunts and visual effects, with huge drama to play. It was really about being as prepared as I could be.” According to Morgan, after all the prep work was done, he just had to “jump in and never stop moving.” “I feel like I didn’t stand still the entire time,” Morgan says with a laugh. “Then when I’m in the scenes, I’m running back and forth to check playback, thinking about the next shot, and acting in the scenes. The whole thing was a terrific learning experience.” Something Morgan had to tackle that most first-time directors don’t have to worry about is acting in front of the camera while simultaneously taking control behind the camera. “For me, the acting in this episode was a lot of two-hander scenes with Hayley [Phoebe Tonkin] and Klaus,” Morgan says. “That was a little easier because it was fairly easy to plan and Phoebe is extremely accommodating to work with. The hardest stuff was some sequences toward the end of the episode with five of us in one scene, and I’m one of the actors in it. That was a little more tricky. That was the most challenging point, being the behind the cameras and being a part of the big sequences.” Morgan always knew he would direct an episode, but he actually expected a much smaller episode for his first time out. “To be honest, I sort of expected them to give me a less challenging episode, but they really didn’t,” Morgan says with a laugh. “Not at all! It was a big episode by all accounts. Now I’m glad, because I think it’s one of the better episodes of the season. I mean, I’m biased but I do think that. Initially reading it, I was like, ‘Oh god, I thought it was going to be a bunch of two-hander scenes and I wouldn’t really be in it much and it would be quite easy and familiar and mostly on our stages.’ And it really wasn’t. It was a lot of location work.” The episode features a mini crossover with The Vampire Diaries when Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Finn (Casper Zafer) head to Mystic Falls to try and find their missing sister Freya (Riley Voelkel), and they come across Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig). Seeing as how Matt was the one who killed Finn on The Vampire Diaries, it’s safe to assume that their first encounter will be … awkward. “Absolutely. And having the knowledge of that, I was able to exacerbate the situation by pitching to everyone that that encounter takes place in the alleyway where Finn was killed by Matt,” Morgan says with a laugh. “That’s where the characters should first meet in Mystic Falls. That was a thrill for me, and I know it will be for the fans. And we’re able to make reference to it in the script as well. Everyone relished in that idea. It’s fun, the idea of these guys going to Mystic Falls, and we have fun with that idea.” He continues, “But I tried to keep an underlying tension there. Finn tries to control his darker impulses, he’s very restrained, but I thought it would be fun to play with that underlying tension of this guy killed me, and for Matt Donovan who’s definitely hardened up since these characters were in Mystic Falls last, to play the sense of this is my town, these guys came to my town, I’m not going to take any shenanigans. It was great to work with Zach again after so long, and in a different capacity as well.” Since Matt had such a tumultuous, layered relationship with the Original sister Rebekah (Claire Holt), who’s currently laying daggered in a coffin in New Orleans, will he ask the Mikaelson brothers about his ex? “Rebekah is mentioned in the episode, I will say that,” Morgan says cryptically. Someone who will finally appear for the first time in a long time is Cami (Leah Pipes), who hasn’t been seen since she effectively broke up with Klaus. “They’re pretty estranged at the moment after she made that decision to push Klaus away like that,” Morgan says. “We see Cami for a scene during my episode but really she’s not a huge part of that world. That’s because she’s consciously separated herself from it. But we definitely will see more and follow through with that. I think we all feel like a confrontation between Cami and Aurora [Rebecca Breeds] is coming, since Aurora killed her and she came back a vampire. [Laughs] So there’s that. At some point, that will have to be paid off, if Aurora can only get out of that wall she’s been bricked up behind.” Morgan knows that there is a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to Cami’s relationship with Klaus, which was cut short after she became a vampire. “Klaus and Cami, that definitely feels unfinished to me,” Morgan says. “That feels like there needs to be some kind of resolve there. He’s gone and left town because he has to, for the good of the baby, but there’s definitely things that were left unsaid there and all of this is going to pay off. Well, look, I know it’s all going to pay off because I’ve shot it already and I’ve read the scripts and been a part of the episodes. [Laughs] I’m excited for everyone to see it because we’re doing the very best for the show and the storylines they’re coming up with, no one will see coming. It’s all exciting and dramatic.” nerdist.com/the-originals-joseph-morgan-talks-going-behind-the-camera-to-direct-the-vampire-diaries-crossover/

The Originals: Go behind the scenes of Joseph Morgan's directorial debut
The Mikaelson family is extremely complicated, and who better to untangle that drama than Julie Plec? The Originals showrunner will blog each week’s installment throughout the season exclusively for EW. From answering burning questions to giving behind-the-scenes stories and more, this is a place for fans to hear directly from Plec about the episode they just watched. Thanks for attending our Joseph Morgan Festival, with an episode starring Joseph Morgan, directed by Joseph Morgan, and blessed by Joseph Morgan, who in my eyes is right up there with the pope. From the minute he entered our lives to originate the role of Klaus Mikaelson in episode 219 of The Vampire Diaries, we knew we had been kissed by the gods. He was kind, lovely, professional, prepared, and monstrously talented. In between seasons 3 and 4 of TVD, Joseph worked with the crew to produce and direct his short film Revelation. He has always wanted to be a filmmaker, and we were thrilled to give him this opportunity to direct for television. Even though Joe is a first-time TV director, we did not go easy and give hm a “light” episode — it had big fights, multiple scenes with five-six principals, VFX, SFX, etc., and he was unflappable, enthusiastic, prepared and was an absolute joy for the cast and crew to work with — earning him the name Captain Morgan. The cast especially loved working with him — and everyone came prepared to impress him. Joseph did have a little difficulty with one actor in particular — the guy who plays Klaus Mikaelsson, but after a good talking-to (in a mirror), Captain Morgan was able to straighten the guy out. It was fun to watch Joseph direct himself and critique his own performances. A playback monitor was set up so that he could first act in a scene, then immediately watch it on playback, and then adjust and correct. Daniel and Caspar did their own “stunt” driving by whisking Elijah’s Porsche past the “Welcome to Mystic Falls” sign. Daniel drove so fast that the cameraman almost got whiplash trying to capture it. Caspar expressed his utter disappointment that Daniel didn’t go faster. At one point our makeup people had so much oozing pus on a dead body that appears in the show, that even Joe and Declan (who both LOVE that sort of thing) had to step in and “de-pusify” in order to make it broadcastable. It snowed off and on during the shooting of our big outdoor fight sequence. So we had to shoot a lot of the fight twice, both with snow and without, in order piece together either a “fight in the snow” or a “fight with no snow.” Though there were a lot of fights and special effects in this episode, Joe really made it a point to focus on the acting, making sure all of the actors got as much prep time as they wanted. Joseph, Daniel and Caspar got together to rehearse on their own time. We had a blast with Zach Roerig, who fit in seamlessly with our cast and crew. We believe our Kingmaker S.W.A.T. team guys were a real S.W.A.T. team. The most fun day on set was watching Joe and Phoebe wipe the walls and floor with that swat team. We all had to wear protective ear plugs because the sound of arms-fire was so loud and continuous. In honor of his first directing gig, Joseph bought himself a fancy puffy jacket to keep him warm during our cold outdoor shoots … but ended up burning a hole in it by standing too close to a heater. Declan and I laughed … until we each burnt holes in our own fancy puffy jackets later on that same day. www.ew.com/article/2016/04/08/originals-julie-plec-blog-behind-the-black-horizon

I think this was one of the best episodes of the season and I think Joseph did a great job directing. I knew Finn was going to die and I still wasn't prepared for it. These scenes between the siblings were beautiful and absolutely heartbreaking! I bawled my eyes out at Finn's death scene and after. Even though Kol hated him which he had every reason to since he was responsible for his death, he could still understand his pain and torment and he was still his brother. After Elijah finally heard Finn's side of the story he could finally understand his hatred for his family and I can't say I blame him! They're responsible for it. He wanted the same thing Kol did, to be loved and accepted by the others. It was nice to see them finally united even if it was on his deathbed. They've all tried to kill each other time and again, but they are still family after all. Always and forever... The Originals 3x17 Finns Death (Killed By Lucien) The Originals 3x17 Finns Funeral

Anyone care to explain? wednesday ? I honestly couldn't tell you anything about the timeline since I don't follow TVD. I read that they're ahead 3 years or something so I don't know if they're ahead of us or not? I'm assuming they are which really doesn't make any sense since we're still in current time. I think Matt's cameo was pointless. I laughed at him thinking he was actually a match for Elijah and Finn! Elijah just looked annoyed and then Matt's face was kinda shocked when he told him they had another sister. Elijah is like yes there is another one of us. At least Matt was wise enough not to get in their way. They could've just knocked him out and borrowed Matt's gun to deal with Lucien. If you figure out the timeline you let me know.

AHhh that's right! Sorry slipped my mind. WEll... lets just say - In tvd timeline the beginning of s7 we see the everyone in town evacuating from mystic falls So im not sure if there was a time jump in the originals at the end of s2 going on to s3. I think between s6 and s7 of tvd theres 6 months or 1 year jump? Yeh i can't remember. THANKS THOUGH!

Like I said I'm not watching it, but I have read a couple of the recaps/reviews because I wanted to see about the crossover with TO which I did check out on youtube. I loved those scenes of Klaus & Stefan. I was always a fan of them even though they had quite the twisted frenemy relationship. I also saw the scene of Caroline arriving in NO to see Klaus and they said he was missing for the past 3 years so I'm assuming that we will do a time jump by the end of the finale? All I know is that this season has been awesome especially after they returned from their hiatus! I loved that they finally brought Kol back! I loved having Finn return even though it was only for a few episodes. Now if only we could get Rebekah. I'd love it even if it was Maisie. I really came to love her as Rebekah. These last few episodes sound like they are going to be intense!!! Two more deaths!!!!
