The Vampire Diaries will end with season 8
After eight years, six doppelgängers, two car accidents on Wickery Bridge, and countless witchy hijinks, The Vampire Diaries has an official expiration date. During Saturday’s Comic-Con panel, showrunner Julie Plec announced season 8 will be the series’ last. An emotional goodbye video the cast put together for the fans, which can be seen above, was shown immediately following the announcement. “The greatest honor you can have as a storyteller in the business of television is to be able to make those decisions with your peers and your fellow storytellers and we have all discussed it and we have made the decision that this is it,” Plec said. “This is going to be the final season. … It’s bittersweet and emotional and we’re going to be crying about this in a few minutes.” To the fans, she added, “You guys stuck with us. … You guys have been with us for this run, and it’s a beautiful run.” The news won’t come as too big of a surprise for die-hard fans. Not only did series star Nina Dobrev exit at the end of season 6, but both Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham have spoken out about the probable farewell in recent months. But now, the question turns to how the series will say goodbye. Plec has spoken in the past about how she and co-creator Kevin Williamson came up with the series’ end way back in season 2. And even as recently as when Dobrev left, Plec said not much had changed. “The sentiment of what we wanted our characters to be feeling when the series was over I think has definitely remained the same; the execution of it will be obviously a bit different.” But for fans panicked the series could end without Elena, Plec has always said that they’d love for Dobrev to return to tie up any loose ends for the young girl whose love story was the centerpiece of the show for so long. “Nina has always said that if there’s something for her to do in the series finale that she will be there to do it,” Plec told EW. “When she left, she said, ‘I want to see this character to its end at the end of the show, so I can’t wait to come back and put her to bed again.’” And if you need a little Dobrev in your life right now, you can check out another Comic-Con reel shown during Saturday’s panel, which pays tribute to some of the great villains of the past, while also teasing the final villain of the series. www.ew.com/article/2016/07/23/the-vampire-diaries-ending-season-8

Comic-Con: 'The Vampire Diaries' to End With Season 8
The news, announced Saturday at Comic-Con, comes after stars Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham previously signaled that the end of the series was in sight. It's official: The CW's The Vampire Diaries will end with its upcoming eighth season. Producers made the announcement Saturday during the show's annual trek to San Diego Comic-Con, though the decision to wrap the series created by Kevin Williamson — who will return as a writer for the final season — and Julie Plec comes as little surprise. Stars Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham had signaled that the end of the drama was in sight. Both actors had previously indicated their plans to do one last season of the series, though Somerhalder later retracted the comments. "We all have discussed it and we've made the decision that this is it," Plec told fans Saturday. "This is going to be the final season of The Vampire Diaries. It's bittersweet and emotional and we're all going to be crying in a minute. It's been a beautiful run.... Get ready, because it's going to be an epic ride." The final season also will be a shortened one, consisting of 16 episodes. The show returns Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.
While once the cornerstone of The CW, The Vampire Diaries, based on the books of the same name, has, like many other veteran series, begun to show its age. In the past few years, the drama was bypassed as the network's most-watched show by The Flash as The CW has made DC Comics fare (including Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and CBS import Supergirl) a priority. “The Vampire Diaries has meant so much to so many fans around the world, and has meant so much to all of us at The CW,” network president Mark Pedowitz said in a release shortly after the news broke at Comic-Con. “I am a huge fan of the show myself, and I’ve seen every episode. So I am very happy that we can give Julie and Kevin the chance to finish their story the way they have envisioned, and to give viewers a fantastic conclusion to eight spectacular seasons.” Renewed for an eighth season earlier this year when the network picked up nearly its entire scripted slate (save for Plec's since-canceled Containment), the series was moved to the typically low-rated Fridays — where, paired with spinoff The Originals, it faced lower expectations from the network. In their new homes, both series ultimately helped improve The CW's performance on the night year-over-year. Speaking to THR following female lead Nina Dobrev's exit in season six, executive producer Plec said her staff had pitched season eight as the series was rebooting itself for season seven. "We've always said as long as we feel like we can keep the show fresh and moving forward, we can keep making it," she said last May. "We have a lot of actors that love remaining with the show, and we have writers who are thrilled to remain with the show, and crew who would love to keep going. As long as people keep watching, we'll try to keep making it until we run out of ideas. We run out of ideas or we run out of viewers; whatever comes first. (Laughs.) But we're really committed to the show. When it is time to end, we all agreed we'll decide that together, and we want to go out sailing." The decision also comes as The CW seemingly has an overabundance of scripted fare with 11 returning series, three new ones and an 11th-hour renewal for Supergirl, which will move from CBS to The CW for season two. That's 15 originals — one more than the network has already aired this season, including the final run of Beauty and the Beast. www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/comic-con-vampire-diaries-end-895646

Comic-Con: The Vampire Diaries team is 'bringing it all home' in final season
The Vampire Diaries is leaving Mystic Falls — but not before one more season of supernatural ups and downs. At the series’ San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, creator Julie Plec announced the eighth season would be the drama’s last, but also teased what’s to come. Not only is producer and writer Kevin Williamson back for the final round, but Plec said the season will take the characters back to Mystic Falls at the start, with only Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) still missing from the fray. “We’ve all been together for so long, and the idea of this last season is bringing it all home back in Mystic Falls,” she explained, adding that season 8’s episode titles will be lines of dialogue from the series’ first season. “We’re visiting relationships and ideas and themes that we did in the early seasons, so I think we’re going to work together to bring everything we have to this last season.” A central story at the start of season 8 will focus on finding Damon and Enzo, while also crafting the new Big Bad of the show. “There is this great thing that’s about to happen, there’s this final Bad,” Williamson said, doing his best to avoid spoilers while saying the new villain would infuse “pure evil” into Mystic Falls. “When Julie pitched it to me… I was like, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool.’” In fact, the supernatural elements of season 8 will be diving into the characters’ heads themselves, Malarkey hinted. “There’s mysterious elements of mind control going on,” he said. “We’ve read four episodes so far, and it’s gripping.” Added Somerhalder: “The mind control thing is interesting, because you’re used to seeing these characters exert that power onto someone else, so when you see them ultimately in this realm where they have no control over their actions… it’s that conflict and that struggle we’re looking for, which is truly a gem for us to play.” Then again, some characters have more personal evils to confront: Bonnie (Kat Graham) will be dealing with the repercussions of losing Enzo and Damon now that she’s “literally at ground zero,” the actress said. Meanwhile, Stefan (Paul Wesley) will be on the hunt for Damon. “He has a broken heart over his bro,” the actor said. “It’s back to the original dynamic of the brothers.” If anything, at least Stefan will have Caroline (Candice King) by his side: “I like happiness, I do,” Plec said. “It’s no secret I’ve been rooting for this couple to be together since episode 202, so I’m happy to bring them to this place where they can find happiness… It’s never going to be easy.” At that, Wesley and King exchanged “I love you“ ‘s in character, to the applause of the crowd. The Vampire Diaries returns Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. www.ew.com/article/2016/07/23/comic-con-vampire-diaries-panel-final-season

The Vampire Diaries @ Comic-Con: 'Evil Herself' Is Coming to Mystic Falls, Plus More Final Season ScoopOn their way to stop Damon and Enzo’s west-coast killing spree, the Vampire Diaries gang on Sunday took a brief detour, hitting up San Diego Comic-Con for the CW drama’s (final!) panel. Stars Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Kat Graham, Candice King, Zach Roerig, Matt Davis and Michael Malarkey were all on hand — along with executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson — to tease the impending events of Season 8, premiering Friday, Oct. 21 at 8/7c: * An intro video, featuring that creepy hand from the Season 7 finale, teased: “This season, get ready to meet evil herself.” (That’s right, herself.) * Kevin Williamson on returning to the writer’s room: “I’ve never been too far away. … As Julie and I sat down to write the first episode of Season 8 together, I was freaking out. … Julie was like, ‘You write all the Damon stuff.’ It came back pretty quickly, and I think we’ve got a great Season 8 planned out. It’s really nice to live in this world again.” * As for what the aforementioned “evil” might be, Plec remained (mostly) tight-lipped: “The villain has a finger so far. … It’s a new take on villains for us. It’s rooted back all the way to ancient times.” * Describing the new Season 8 villain as the “final bad,” Williamson noted that it’s a “cool way to infuse Mystic Falls with this ultimate evil. It’s like a cherry on top of the entire mythology of Mystic Falls.” * Meanwhile, Somerhalder said, we’ll see “Damon and Enzo doing some gnarly s–t,” adding that “the mind control thing is actually quite interesting. … In their minds, they’re still them. That conflict and that struggle is what we always look for.” * Sadly, Bonnie is “literally at ground zero” when Season 8 begins. “A lot of last season was about the development of the relationship Bonnie had with Enzo, and obviously Bonnie and Damon,” Graham said. “You saw the crumbling of her in the finale. She also doesn’t have her magic. The thing that made her feel like herself, and also her best friends, are not there. It’s going to be really exciting to see Bonnie’s journey this season.” * Poor Stefan is “just crying, constantly,” Wesley teased. “[He’s] missing his bro, his bro-ham. It’s back to the original dynamic of the brothers. The dynamic was always Damon getting in trouble and Stefan trying to save him. … We’ll see how long that lasts, but for the current time, he has a broken heart over his big bro.” * Caroline is “very busy” in Season 8, trying to maintain a connection with Alaric and the twins while also “helping Stefan and Bonnie track down Damon and Enzo.” * As for everyone’s favorite human, Matt Donovan “had to make the decision to let go of that love [for the vampires].” * Every Season 8 episode title will be a line of dialogue from previous seasons. tvline.com/2016/07/23/the-vampire-diaries-spoilers-season-8-comic-con-panel-recap-2016/#more-734946

Vampire Diaries’ cast reveals surprising ideas for how it ends
Hearts broke all around the world on Saturday (July 23) when "The Vampire Diaries" announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Season 8 would be its final season. Say it ain't so! As we prepare to say goodbye to everyone in Mystic Falls, Zap2it couldn't help but wonder what the cast envisions as their own perfect ending for their characters and the series? Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley have a dark future envisioned for Damon and Stefan, suggesting that the two brothers should basically commit suicide by taking off their daylight rings and walking into the sun. It sounds too dark to be true, but you just never know with "The Vampire Diaries." Zach Roerig came up with an even more shocking idea for Matt. "If I could envision a happy ending for Matt Donovan after seven years of not finding love, it would be that maybe he discovers his inner love, which is maybe the fact that he's not into chicks." Whether "The Vampire Diaries" ends with a gay Matt, a double suicide, or the long-awaited Delena reunion, we're definitely going to be crying our way through the entire thing. #TVDForever "The Vampire Diaries" returns Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Thanks for posting all of these clips, wednesday! It's been quite the weekend with this announcement. Very excited that KW is returning! Dare we have hope? Not sure why they decided to only do 16 episodes - other than the late start, what will the season look like? I mean, which months will be getting reruns that would have had new episodes in the past?

Oh no problem! I love CC! They've put out a lot of great stuff for all of our shows! I'm very happy that KW is returning too. Hopefully he can give the fans a season they'll be happy with. I think Paul and Ian's HEA for Stefan & Damon is pretty hilarious! Going out together in a burst of flames! I really don't think that's what JP & KW have in mind though.

The Vampire Diaries Casts UnREAL Beauty — As 'Evil Herself’?
Something wicked this way comes — or, rather, someone wicked. UnREAL alumna Nathalie Kelley is joining The Vampire Diaries for Season 8 — its final season — in the heavily recurring role of Sybil, aka “evil herself.” But come on — can the character really be that bad? Apparently so. The casting breakdown for the dastardly immortal describes her as a power monger who manipulates her victims “into twisted games and tests for her own amusement and glorification.” Underneath, however, Sybil is just like all of us: She only wants to be loved. (Aww.) At the series’ Comic-Con panel Saturday, executive producer Julie Plec elaborated on what would make the minx such a formidable femme fatale. “It’s a new take on villains for us,” she said. “It’s rooted back all the way to ancient times.” In related news, the show has cast two Containment grads, Kristen Gutoskie and Demetrius Bridges, as, respectively, Seline and Dorian, Alaric’s new nanny and intern tvline.com/2016/07/24/the-vampire-diaries-nathalie-kelley-cast-sybil-season-8/#more-735327

Vampire Diaries Video: Stars Reveal Their Favorite 'Ships, Tease Elena's Final-Season Return and More
Get those tissues ready, because you’re about to watch The Vampire Diaries cast’s last San Diego Comic-Con interview ever. The whole gang, along with executive producer Julie Plec, swung by TVLine’s SDCC suite (presented by ZTE) on Saturday evening to preview the CW drama’s epic final season, as well as look back on seven years of blood, sweat and (mostly) tears in Mystic Falls. Among the topics discussed: * Which dream ‘ships would the cast have loved to see? (Hint: If it were up to Matt Davis, Alaric would have worked his way through all of his former students by now.) * Which iconic prop is everybody planning to steal from the set before leaving for the last time? * If Stefan and Caroline do, in fact, get the #SterolineJuneWedding the fans are hoping/tweeting for, will that make Stefan the stepdad to Alaric’s twins? * Will Bonnie ever get her magic back?! * And, of course, what are the chances we’ll see Elena in the flesh before the series finale cuts to black? (Spoiler alert: Pretty damn good!) tvline.com/2016/07/24/the-vampire-diaries-elena-returning-season-8-interview-video/#more-735311
