The Tomorrow People' at PaleyFest: Spoilers and more for the new show
The Tomorrow People the new science-fiction show coming to The CW this fall, was the featured panel at the PaleyFest previews in Los Angeles on Saturday (Sept. 7). Producers Greg Berlanti, Julie Plec and Phil Klemmer, director Danny Cannon and actors Robbie Amell and Mark Pellegrino got on stage after a pilot screening.
Highlights from the panel:
Robbie Amell, who plays the central character of Stephen, wasn't originally going for that part. Instead, he auditioned for John -- the leader of the underground Tomorrow People movement in the pilot. That part went to Luke Mitchell. Amell is fine with this -- he always thought he was more like the adolescent Stephen.
What kind of person is Stephen? Amell said that director Cannon told him to think of "Donnie Darko."
Pellegrino plays the antagonist in "The Tomorrow People," Jedekiah. But the actor doesn't think Jedekiah is evil. "I love his passion, his commitment to his cause," Pellegrino explained. "Don't say Jedekiah's a bad guy! I love Jedekiah."
The pilot episode introduces the main characters but it does not delve into their back-stories. Later episodes will. Episode 3 focuses on Cara, the female lead. A flashback will show what she was like earlier, and how she found out about her fate.
Jason Dohring ("Veronica Mars") will guest-star in another flashback, the one that tells John's story. He will be a "dark and tortured soul" who shows what John might be like without stepping into a leadership role.
There may be some love triangles in "The Tomorrow People," but don't expect romance to be at the center of the show. When questioned about it, Julie Plec would only allow that "there are geometric opportunities."
The Tomorrow People" is not some "X-Men" rip-off. The show tries to keep a stronger foot in reality. "We're not in such a hurry to turn this into an all-out comic-books freak-out," Klemmer told the PaleyFest audience.
Stephen's father is missing in "The Tomorrow People." This fact is so important that searching for dad is the driving story throughout the first season.
In case you missed it, Dan Stevens of "Downton Abbey" will provide the voice for the heroes' super-computer, TIM. "I'm not complaining about Cousin Matthew," Plec commented on the choice. "It's kind of awesome."
An upcoming character -- Simon Merrells -- will work closely with Jedekiah at the evil agency, Ultra. Berlanti described the man as an Emperor to Jedekiah's Darth Vader. "Mark, someone's going to be more evil than you. Are you ready for that?" Berlanti asked.
Despite being paired with "Arrow" -- and despite sharing an executive producer in Berlanti and despite Robbie being the cousin of that show's star, Stephen Amell -- don't expect a crossover. This is a disappointment to Robbie Amell. "I'm Batman-obsessed, so Stephen pitched a way for me to come on as Bruce Wayne," the actor said. "If they wanted me to play a tree, I would play a tree on 'Arrow.'"
The Tomorrow People can't kill. It's considered an evolutionary thing in the show. And it's awesome. As Cannon put it, "The next stage in evolution can't kill? That's beautiful."
The best audience question ever was directed at Mark Pellegrino: "Have you ever played anyone who liked his brother?"
"The Tomorrow People" premieres Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. on The CW.

CASTING SCOOP: Spartacus Villain Brings Reign of Terror to The CW's Tomorrow People
Simon Merrells, who played the evil Marcus Crassus in Starz’ Spartacus: War of the Damned, is joining The Tomorrow People in a recurring role. According to exec producer Phil Klemmer, Merrells will play “somebody who has a lot of power over” Mark Pellegrino’s villain Jedikiah, adding, “We’re going to get to see him, hopefully, through the back half [of the season].”
The casting follows last week’s news that Merrells’ Spartacus co-star, Cynthia Addai Robinson, is joining Tomorrow People‘s Wednesday lead-in Arrow as DC Comics baddie Amanda Waller. And Arrow already counts Spartacus‘ Manu Bennett as a regular.
The Tomorrow People premieres Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 9/8c.

I have to say, I like the show. There are some stupid kids out there with powers though (stealing $17/70 million, trying to tag the Oval Office, and stealing nuclear launch codes and posting them on Twitter ). So far, I like all the characters. Stephen, Cara, John and Russell. Didn't see the little reveal near the end coming with Jed being Stephen's uncle. I love the teleportation SFX. Combat I think is handled well. These are people with basic defense training simply trying to survive so their fights aren't exactly precise/clean which I like.

The more I saw this episode The More I thought Stephen looks like Oliver so much I would think they are brothers. Im taking that Stephen will be playing his uncle trying to get as much info as he can. and his father could have easily teleported from the car so i dont take hes actually dead.

That was bothering me the entire episode. They're supposed to be cousins but I'll be damned if they don't look like brothers.
I was surprised at first that Stephen sided with his uncle, who was part of an organization that killed his father but then it hit me that he was acting as a spy with Cara keeping a tab on him with her telepathy. And yeah, I find it hard to believe that his father would be dead. I actually expect the video he saw to be doctored just so Jed could get Stephen on their side (cause he's showing new abilities). I expect Stephen's father to show up later in the show alive and well, maybe as developed as Stephen with new powers.

Tonights Episode was pretty cool.
Stephen is getting a hang of his powers and gaining some new ones with seeing memories etc. He was able to save that kid but got his partner killed in the process. I guess he sees what hes gotten himself into.
John and Cara are together but not boyfriend or girlfriend? I see where thats going to cause drama.
Stephen still looks like Oli to me but im getting a handle on it lol
I know none of the tomorrow people can kill but i have a feeling Stephen might be strong enough to be able to eventually. just a theory im throwing out there
I wonder who his uncle is working for since he said he also has people he answers to.
