I don't believe she is a heretic, I just think she is the one who turned them (the yet to be seen 6 heretics) into witchpires. It appears that Lily is not (nor has she ever been referenced in the show as being in the Gemini coven, one would think the coven would know if she were one of them since they knew why she was imprisoned). The six heretics ran into ripper Lily in Europe, were she turned them, and then were put into the prison world upon their return to Manhattan with their new found immortal power. I haven't found any other TVD websites that reference Lily as being a heretic also. How can she do magic as a vampire though? That was purposefully included in the story; it's not simply an oversight or shoddy writing. Lily's not a Gemini, but so far there's nothing saying she had to come from Gemini to be unusual in the same way the heretics are. (Thanks for the info on Kat Graham btw crimmy - good point about the lack of female leads. They're trying to thin the herd of guys, or rather, the guys are thinning themselves.)

Remind me again what magic she has done? I can't recall seeing her do any out right magic. She didn't magically open the caskets on the boat, the heretics themselves did that...as Jo is telling the story about how they can do magic and be vampires, them unscrewing their own caskets (which they would easily be able to do because they are powerful at this point, Lily presence just signaled to them it was safe to "come out") was the director showing us as Jo is describing it.

Doh, i'm a doofus. When I watched the intercutting of the scenes of Lily looking at the ascendant with the caskets unscrewing, I thought the close-ups were screws on the ascendant box and Lily was magically unscrewing them as she'd done with the caskets. You know, her one magical ability. So she's just a vampire. Oh well, thanks for clearing that up!

The part that is frustrating this season is the fact there is any confusion at all...Like are the writers purposefully trying to deflect so it will all be explained in the finale somehow or are they really just assuming the audience no longer cares about those details as long as their ship of choice gets romance screen time? There has been far too much confusion this season about things happening with 2nd tier characters and plot lines when it should really be more clear.

My thing is, it looks like the episode has flashbacks. How are they going to fit all the flashback scenes, current scenes, Elena's Goodbys AND close out the season while introducing new conflict for next season ALL in an hour episode?

The only scene that will require any time will be the DE good bye. All other scenes are secondary and will be treated as such.
