Thanks, tara! I liked a LOT this episode. I thought it was beautifully shot, to begin with. I liked the time spent on each of the core relationships, and the thoughtful dialogue between characters. I felt what everyone actually did was totally in character. First of all, Candice Accola's performance as Caroline was the most accomplished she's given on the Vampire Diaries. She was a very close second to a great day with Katherine. This is the first time I have felt this about Caroline. The slow build on Stefan and Caroline actually paid off for me a little this episode, too. I believed Damon this episode. I totally liked that Damon was schooled by both Mama and Bonnie, both very strong. It takes a village of strong females to raise Damon Salvatore. Stefan's mental powers were put to good use in the multiple mind melds he used bring Caroline back. An old trick but it felt new and well-done. It was heartbreaking that the letter was burnt! I totally teared up when Caroline saw her mother walking away. Loved Jo and Alaric. They grounded the whole episode. Also liked that Matt had some presence, even his own scene! OMG I even liked Lily and Enzo. I totally bought their connection on the grounds of loyalty. Also very much liked Nina Dobrev's performance as Elena. Waiting for the other shoe to drop on Lily. I really like her so far. But I feel we have not seen the full extent of her dark side.

I liked this episode a lot too, demetra. If I came away critical of anything, though, it was how unbelievably inconsistent the quality is in this show. At one point I yelled at the writers, "You know how to do this! Why can't you do it every time?!" The good episodes just make the bad ones more annoying. But I digress... Candice was brilliant--she was so evil when she snapped Stefan's neck and kicked down the door--proving that both the actress and the character can and should be allowed to be this awesome always. I am completely on board with Caroline becoming the lead female next year. On that note, I loved the S/C scenes, there were so many different levels of intensity going on there. Stefan held it together but just barely--loved how careful he tried to be but nearly lost it whenever she touched him. Their relationship now has sufficient angst to overcome and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. I do believe they're endgame though. I'm going on the record that I think Stefan made a copy of Liz's letter. I think he knew this might happen. I think he might give it to her in the finale. Loved the Bamon scene, she finally refused to help and said what we've all been thinking for six seasons. I detest the cure storyline, but Lily's manipulation was cool. I think Ian played it right in that Damon may say he's completely in love with Elena, but his reactions and expressions seem very conflicted, and starting to wonder where his own loyalties lie (to Elena, Bonnie or Lily). Of course, who am I kidding, none of that will matter in the end because it will still be all about Elena. What was the meaning of the shirtless Matt scene? I actually liked it because it made us pause to think about what his character must be feeling. Will he finally be their antagonist next year? Enzo Lily scenes were ok. Hopefully they build to something that redeems how boring he's been. I'm not going to be happy unless there's another family connection there, but oh well. It bugged me that the writers are still giving us empty Stelena references. I find it insulting to the fandom at this point, tbh.

Some quick thoughts for now.
All I've wanted this season was a reunion between Bonnie and Matt, and I couldn't even get that. At first I couldn't even remember where Matt was (which is so, so sad). Took me a while to remember he's in training.
I like that Caroline called Elena out again, and again she couldn't even defend herself. I was in denial about the letter, I didn't think they'd give it to her right away. Kept thinking they swapped it with a fake.
I loved the scene where Jo and Ric were playing cards and Elena comes along "I thought you were on guard duty". I was totally fooled. I thought Caroline got out and I thought " how convenient, no one there to stop her." Now I'm wondering where the hallucinations really started.
Love, love, love that Bonnie didn't back down with Damon. She keeps trying to teach him the world STILL doesn't revolve around him and his actions DO have consequences.
How did mama Salvatore not hear Bonnie's heartbeat? Speaking of heartbeats, I was really surprised that Caroline kept saying Stefan's heart kept racing. Guess there hearts do beat...
That's all for now. Overall, an okay episode

Elena may be a rookie, but Stefan and Damon aren't that stupid, I'm sure they thought of everything beforehand. When I saw Matt at the grill (couldn't read the logo), but thought, "when did he become manager?" But realized I was wrong when he changed into his uniform. That scene was really random, I guess stalling techniques now involve shirtless scenes lol. Loved when lily went for a walk and almost got run over, but why would she call Enzo? I guess in her mind they are starting right where they left off?

It might have been the only sign that the director was directing a TVD episode for the first time?
