LOVEEEEEE! A Buffy thread! As much as I do love me some TVD there is nothing that can hold a candle to love I feel for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Seriously, not just a genre show but one of THE best shows ever conceived for television. I might hang out in this thread as much as I do the threads for TVD. I often like to use Buffy as a comparison point to where the writers in TVD are getting things all wrong by being irresponsible (or having major continuity issues). And for full disclosure I am actually more a Spuffy than Bangel BUT I shipped both when they were a present thing. What I always appreciated about BtVS and their writers is the responsibility they took in the consequences of their characters actions and how that can affect the culture of the viewing audience. For example, after the events of Seeing Red, the writers never just whitewashed that and allowed Spike and Buffy to continue on in their friendship as if that incident didn't happen. As a matter of fact Buffy and Spike never had a romantic or sexual relationship after that fact. Joss would never allow something like Delena to ever happen because he wouldn't want to live in a world in which a woman would want to be with someone who killed her brother out of spite and have that incident never be an issue again. Redemption doesn't mean loving someone despite who they are, redemption means atonement. Heck, even the incidents of season 2 forever altered Buffy and Angel's relationship to which Angel still has to atone for, especially for Giles. But if Giles existed in TVD land, he and Angel would be drinking buddies and all would be hunky dory, who cares what he did to Ms. Calender or Giles as long as he saves the day on occasion, right?! Don't even get me started... or do, I will talk Buffy until someones stakes me.

It's amazing how they went from that pilot to the show we know and love now. It is so rare in television to have such a strong female hero like Buffy (lets face it, the writers did an excellent job with most the female characters on that show) that I had such high hopes for Elena, but once Elena's romantic entanglements became more important to her character she went the opposite direction and turned more into the stereotypical damsel. I love that Buffy was strong and not afraid to pick herself over her boyfriends. Like she told Angel... "You know me, not much with the damseling" and don't even get me started on her cookie dough speech. Yeah Elena, take a page from Buffy...you aren't done baking yet.

Flutie In the pilot Buffy was more like the Buffy from the 1992 movie, I didn't hate that movie though as much as others maybe did. It certainly wasn't like the series, but in any case it was a beginning. A cheesy beginning

I'm glad didn't watch it week to week because it would have been tuff to wait. This series is a gift from Josh Whedon ..... what a story teller. His triangles consisted of Buffy, Angel and Angel's soul.... then Buffy, Spike, and Buffy's soul. I agree Josh left very few plot holes and he did hold his characters responsible for their actions. Buffy's the reason I started watching TVD and JP certainly does her share of ripping it off. Too bad she didn't rip off the responsibility theme. LOL

shoe20 Seriously you are re viewing the Buffster this summer?! YES! I have rewatched it so many times I have it memorized (and memorialized). I hear ya on the JP ripping off everything but the character responsibility theme. The one thing that would propel TVD to the next level of character development, actually holding characters accountable. WHERE IS DAMON'S ATONEMENT?! There can be no redemption without it. ergo his "development" rings hollow. I totally found my way to TVD because of Buffy. TVD is the closest I have found to being able to recapture some of that, BUT lets be honest BtVS was lightning in a bottle. Can't be duplicated because there aren't a lot of Joss Whedon's in the world. Are you going all 7 seasons in your re view? Count me in to break it down with ya. I got my Buffy shot glass on the ready to christen each episode. Yeah I am THAT geek. I also have the green coffee mug that Giles often drinks his tea from. A 1940s Fire King jadeite d ring mug, if you ever need to ebay for one!

So shoe20 you think Plec may have ripped off a little of this Buffy & Angel "Amends" for the Stefan & Elena final scene in Blood Brothers?! hehe.
